Scarlet Elfcup's, puddles and moss. Just February 25m from the M6 (the UK's longest motorway). You don't need to travel to see nature, it's what you drive past, unseen, on your way to a 'nature destination'. Go and see your local nature first :)

First visit since November to a local spot. It's like a little rainforest but is completely enclosed by modernity and nothing is natural. The pool was made to top up a canal and the reason it's so sheltered and moist is the fact it's in the shade of a motorway. Nature isn't something we need to travel to visit, we are nature and it's all around us if you look.

a pale coloured fungus sits like a shelf added to a moss covered, but very much living, tree. Greens and browns provide an out of focus background.

Finally wrote up the muddy trip to Pendeford Mill Reserve on Monday. It's actually the first proper post on the site to have all it's images and meta-data (AuHD issues here I feel) Anyway, a write up of a muddy walk that claimed at least one soul (well sole) and led to my first almost in focus shot of a treecreeper.

Swifts are disappearing from our skies fast: numbers have fallen by up to 60% in a single generation.

And yet thereโ€™s a simple solution to this speedy decline. The Government just needs to make it a legal requirement for all new houses to include swift bricks: a ยฃ35 hollow brick that gives these birds a safe place to nest.

Scotland has already done this but the rest of the UK still lags behind.

We must push the UK Government to do the same here in England

A sprinkling of snow here in the middle of the UK, just enough to look pretty but not enough to stop you slipping on the ice underneath.
Fluffy robins, looking like feathered Christmas baubles.
Only a few footprints, even the dog walkers have stayed inside today.

Posh Brits looking for something new to kill is it?
The Badger cull was shown to be a cruel waste of time, but then that's what excites the Posh, isn't it?

The National Emergency Briefing on Thursday has so far had very limited mainstream media coverage. We can fix that.

Copse of 90 Wellingtonia / Giant Sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum). Planted 1868. Locally claimed to be largest and oldest Sequoia wood in UK. Do you know of any bigger?

#The89Percent want more #ClimateAction, yet currently our representatives are more likely to be swayed by corporate misinformation than hear from experts.

Great chance to change this in the UK. nebriefing.org

Every summer, Bradfield Woods bursts with life in Suffolk, England.

From red admirals to brimstone butterflies, the buzz of biodiversity captivates those who visit.

This ancient woodland represents a bygone era when much of Britain thrived like this.

GIANT MUTANT WASP ALERT! Seen 2 of these, yesterday. Wasp colours, but twice the size+width. The one I got a good look at didn't seem v well designed, as it seemed incapable of flying, and kept falling on it's back each time it tried. Actual wasp but mutant? #uknature #ukweather

When you see some parastitic wasps fly by it's easy to see why people believe they've seen fairies as they do look like tiny fairy beings. Photo 3 was out of focus but I've included it as the purple sheen on its wings is visible. When it flew past the wings shimmered blue-purple against the sun. Beautiful, ethereal beings.

Of course this shimmery blue beauty caught my eye on my walk earlier, how could it not? Common blue butterfly (Polyommatus icarus).

The distinctive yellow band on this hoverfly in the garden caught my eye. Apparently common but new to me. Dasysyrphus tricinctus, aka yellow-girdled brusheye.

Just popped out to put some washing on the line and a leafcutter bee (Megachile centuncularis) flew by carrying its cargo. It took a little break on my garden table so I grabbed my phone and waited for it to take off again so I could see it grasp its leaf. Hereโ€™s a little slo-mo clip
