Here's a small collection of big iron. "Charly" has a couple of IBM machines: a 7094 and a System/360. There's a really hard to spot ICT 1301 panel in the "Doomwatch" episode "No Room for Error". Finally the "Blake's 7" episode "Space Fall" (for which we had already recorded an ICT 1301) also has panels from a Sperry Univac 9400 and, making its Starring-the-Computer debut, the Sperry UNIVAC 9200/9300.

If you can, please pitch in to help The Computer Museum in the small town of Camburzano, Italy.

They've got hold of a haul of ancient big iron in surprisingly good shape and they need funds to safeguard this rare machinery:

We are about to save an enormous quantity of extremely rare machines, some of which may be unique, dating back as far as 70 years.
Among the equipment to be saved are machines from both #IBM and #Remington #Rand for the creation and management of punch cards (one of the earliest methods of loading programs), huge #Sperry #Univac #mainframes complete with their tape units, disks, and printers, as well as the earliest #Olivetti systems. All the machines are in astonishingly good condition and perhaps, with good care, even functional.

1968 sales quote to Princeton for a 1108. 131K words (36b) of core memory at $915K is about $0.20 per bit! They bought an IBM 360/91 instead.

1967: Great rant by Boeing's data center manager about IBM maintenance problems -- reprinted by UNIVAC! Full PDF: drive.google.com/file/d/1Zb6s_

The material which I draw upon for my purposes today has been gleaned over ten
years as a victim of outrageous hardware. I've run the gamut from part—user of
a 701 to manager of a $25 million—a—year installation. Today I have at least one
of almost everything that IBM ever invented. I suppose God has chosen to punish
me here on earth. For some reason He just can't wait. The consequent baptism
by fire puts me in an unequalled position to address you today on the subject of
Customer Engineering. My last subtitle is what I think of the 360. This , of course, is really a speech
in its own right. I don't have time to give more than a brief summary here today.

Firstly, I think it is appropriate to state my reasons for choosing the 360 in the
first place. We chose it for its peripherals. Peripherals are the key to data processing, not main frames. I should point out here that I do not regard the 360 as
a computer, and for that reason, we do not use it as such. We do our computing,
our arithmetic that is , on the machine of another vendor. The 360 has a short
machine which makes it effectively even shorter
WOT d l eng th, it is a hexadecimal
and it does not have floating point round. You can say that the model 91 commits
round—off error faster than anything on the face of the earth, while the first lecture
in the introductory course of any Numerical Analysis Program states that this is
the fundamental problem of computation and the source of all evil. It is one of the
supreme mysteries of IBM, the omission of rounding in the 360. It would be less
of a mystery if IBM were to come right out and say that the 360 is intended for
data processing and not for computing.
