Until 1781, the known solar system consisted of six planets. On March 13 of that year, astronomer William Herschel observed a faint object in the constellation Gemini and noted that it was moving slowly relative to the background stars. Initially thinking it was a comet, Herschel later correctly identified it as a planet and wanted to keep it named after the monarch of the British Empire who had adopted it. However, astronomers decided to maintain the tradition of basing planets on mythological figures, and the seventh planet became known as Uranus. Because of its great distance from Earth, for two centuries, astronomers knew little about Uranus other than its five moons and the discovery of rings around the planet in 1977. The Voyager 2 flyby in 1986 greatly increased our knowledge of this distant world.

British-German astronomer #WilliamHerschel discovered the seventh planet, #Uranus, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1781. A unique world that spins on its side with a 98-degree axial tilt, its pale cyan colour comes from a frigid atmosphere made up mainly of hydrogen, helium, & methane.

On 3/13/1781, William Herschel observed Uranus and correctly identified it as a planet rather than a star. If we'd only taken his suggestion to name the planet after King George III, we would have been spared centuries of schoolboy sniggers about the "discovery of your anus".

The first 9 (of 13) #RingsOfUranus were definitively found on #ThisDayInHistory in 1977. All the gas giants have them, though #Saturn's were seen much earlier. The first claimed sighting of any at #Uranus was by #WilliamHerschel in 1789, but it is doubted he could have seen them.

#Voyager2's close encounter with #Uranus wasn't in the original plan
At the time of Voyager 2's launch, Uranus wasn't part of the formal plan. The mission was referred to for a long time as the Mariner Jupiter-Saturn project. The #JPL engineers famously had other ideas and ensured the #spacecraft had enough fuel to continue on a trajectory to Uranus and beyond if the mission was approved.
