"Autonomous" weapons systems ought to be regulated at the level of nuclear weapons and treated with as much care. "Autonomous" is a weasel word for "indiscriminate".
Imagine one million tiny, cheaply-made explosive drones that are "controlled" by "AI" and deployed at an "enemy", after which no human beings are involved or even could be involved in what happens. The massive destruction is ballistic at that point, let's be real. The fact that the algorithms guiding the weapons employ gradient descent in a slightly different way from previous weapons systems makes no difference to this reality.
