This analysis (even if it is by Maguire - probably pished and dissapointed) gets one thing correct. This is a shock to both Labour and Reform and a great start for Plaid.

Welsh Parliament elections could be apocalyptic for Labour
new
Plaid Cymru secured nearly half the vote in Caerphilly. This result suggests a significant shift in Welsh politics. It raises questions about Labour’s future

Reform UK gain Caerphilly. So reads the sentence much of the Labour Party at Westminster expected to wake to; voters in South Wales have ensured they do not have to. The reality for Sir Keir Starmer is worse even than that, for here is the sentence his party must reckon with instead: Plaid Cymru gain Caerphilly with nearly half of the vote, Reform second, Labour down to 11 per cent in seat it’s held for a century.
Nigel Farage has been denied a famous victory, and that is what much of Westminster will focus on this morning. Some will go as far as to say it is good news for the prime minister, in that Plaid beating Reform by 47 per cent to 36 per cent — a margin of nearly 4,000 votes in a by-election the latter fought hard – suggests progressives are willing to come out and vote to stop Farage. Maybe. But on this evidence, those voters are just as repulsed by Starmer’s Labour Party as they are by Reform.

Plaid Cymru win - in Caerphilliy in the Senedd elections, with a healthy majority over Reform (who had been widely predicted to be in the lead). Notable was Labour’s collapse.

Plaid: 15,961
Reform: 12,113
Labour: 3,713

A good start and I hope Farage who appeared confident had some sore underwear to hand.

50.4% turnout, blimey.

Some optimistic noises coming from Plaid, especially around youth turnout.

I'm still predicting disaster, but if it's one in which voters abandon my party for Plaid while rejecting Reform, I'd be content with it being a disaster merely for my party rather than for my country.

Anecdotally, I encounter this fairly regularly too — mostly, but not exclusively, from the right, and usually from the politically unengaged.

As described here, Reform are only interested in the Welsh elections next May to shore up resources for their national party rather than legislating responsibly for Wales and Welsh people — but I think it a valid concern that our very democracy may be on the ballot too.

NIMBYs opposing green infrastructure yet again.

I'm an extremist who thinks landowners who prevent us from building goddamn anything should have their assets seized and be tried and executed as traitors, but it is disappointing to see Plaid turn to this niche form of usually right-wing populism — as the Greens have in England.

I look forward to the tears when we take an axe to the Town and Country Planning Act later in the year.

@JugglingWithEggs
My MP is Jessica Morden. She is a good constituency MP but also part of the government. So she follows party lines. I am in email correspondence as she replied to my email about the Climate Bill. Today I have written disagreeing with de regulation and runway approvals. We have #Senedd elections in #Wales next year and I fear that Reform will take a lot of seats particularly if she continues with the attacks on Welfare and by not funding social housing.
