Gently moving warm bedding aside so as not to disturb his quiet slumber,
Hands reaching in the darkness
for the top piece on last night's
carefully arranged pile of clothing.
Slowly and silently dressing without light,
Arranging each layer carefully ,
Fingers searching for
and covering spaces between.
Hair strands pulled together as soft and warm togue descends
Laces tied, coat zippered, snaps clicked,
flaps sealed
Scarf covers nose, mouth and exposed neck
Hood lifted and lowered,
elastic ties tightened and set
One last look at the motionless figure
curled beneath the warm comforter
Door slowly closing without a sound
Hands explore the depth of windproof mittens
Boots groan in the cold
as feet are set in motion
Tentatively testing
feeling their way
in the inky darkness,
wary of ice and potholes
on deserted one lane roadway
Stars in abundance
contrasted with
irregular silhouette of tree tops
Minutes are marked by
each breath cloud
Scraping of soles ended
Body at rest awaiting.
Morning faint glow of sunray fingers
begin to rise
from distant water horizon
Greeting the earth
