As my #selfhosted #Mastodon instance is more needy than my #GoldenRetriever #puppy (picture for shameless follower-scoring attached), I am trying #GoToSocial now. Currently mainly on @choyer but may move to here once #GtS fully supports hashtags, hoping that my vserver can handle GtS’s ram and storage needs a little better. #dog #dogs #dogsoffediverse #fediverse #followfriday

Forgot to share this here, but 6 August is the anniversary of the discover of #Pulsars by Dame Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell.

She was looking through the roll of data from the telescope she helped build and noticed a little bit of ‘scruff’.

Her discovery changed our understanding of the Universe but sadly her male supervisor took credit and got the Nobel prize for it!

Carl Ritter was born in 1779.

Carl Ritter's 19 part (21 volume) masterwork, "Erdkunde im Verhältnis zur Natur und zur Geschichte des Menschen" (Geography in Relation to Nature and the History of Mankind), is one of the most extensive works of geographical literature written by a single author.

Ritter unfolded and established the treatment of geography as a study and a science. His treatment was endorsed and adopted by all geographers. via @wikipedia

As the song on the radio played, Arnold couldn’t help but wonder if this poor Taylor Swift girl would ever find true happiness. He made a mental note to send her one of his tennis balls when he got home.

I like trees. And moss. Not that keen on rain, but without it we wouldn't have the other two.

I had no idea that there were hairy snails, but here is a German hairy snail, and it lives in the Thames in London (having arrived during the last Ice Age when the UK and the rest of the European continent were connected by land).

For any Londoners out there, this book is great - a lovely exploration of the nature that exists in the city and where to find it: wildlondon.org.uk/news/announc

What an incredible human being. Via James Hawkins on the bird app. 🥺❤️ #SineadO’Connor

I was greatly saddened by the death of Sinéad O'Connor. She was a very different person behind her fame. In 1991, my 20-y.o. daughter, Louise, was suffering from terminal cancer, when she received a phone call from Sinéad out of the blue. Sinead had heard of Louise's illness from some source, probably the press as we were raising funds for our local hospice. My daughter was a great admirer of her & loved her music. During this long call, Sinéad invited my daughter to travel to London to spend some time with her. Needless to say, Louise was thrilled. A few days later she met Louise at Euston station & Louise had the best week of her short life. They dined, they drank, they danced, but most of all they laughed irreverently. Sinéad was at the height of her fame at this time & found it highly amusing that when they were out people were asking for Louise's autograph. Louise returned home exhausted & happier than I had seen her since her devastating cancer diagnosis. It didn't stop there: this lovely, compassionate woman always stayed in touch. She sent Louise wine & flowers & letters right up until her death in 1992. On Louise's last visit to London, Sinéad gave her her platinum disc for her song Nothing Compares 2 U & dedicated her Christmas record Silent Night to her. During all this time, Sinéad never sought any publicity for these acts of love & compassion. Today my thoughts are with 2 remarkable women who, I have no doubt, will be somewhere still laughing, dancing & singing.

Bei INSA Umfragen hat die AfD oft Spitzenwerte.
1. Könnte es daran liegen, dass der INSA Chef seit Jahren die AfD berät?
2. Kann es sein, dass konstant höhere Werte für eine Partei auch die reale Stimmung beeinflussen?🤔Also Wahlkampfhilfe hintenrum?
3. Wäre das eigentlich legal?

A new 500 million year old #sea #jelly 🪼 #fossil, and the first sea jelly from the #Burgess #Shale.

The researchers named it Burgessomedusa phasmiformis. The species name means “ghostly form” because they thought it looks like the ghosts from #Pac-#Man.

There is some dispute, but this may be the oldest known sea jelly, and is important to our understanding of the #evolution of #animals.
