are split keyboards worth the hype? what’s your experience with them vs regular mechanical keyboards + switching between a standard laptop keyboard when out and about to the split keyboard at home?

i don’t have plans to get one now, largely because of how difficult they are to find and the consequent higher costs… the ZSA Moonlander is what i’ve been eyeing for a while, but i’m curious to hear what people think

One of the hardest parts of chronic illness is that you can do everything “right” & still have a setback.

You can rest, eat healthy, manage stress & take all your meds & still have a horrible flare.

The loss of control is painful, and a big part of why folks are afraid of people with disabilities

The non disabled need to believe that they can “healthy living” or “try harder” their way out of disability.

That they’re the exception. That we have failed because we didn’t really “want” to get better.

They can’t fathom that sometimes it doesn’t matter what you do, you still get sicker

@EpiphanicSynchronicity wow! this is indeed very reasonable, i’ll check it out. for now though, i’m also happy with obsidian sync and iVim :)

2025-02-05

@EpiphanicSynchronicity late reply but i’ve heard of working copy! tbh i’ve been interested to try it out but am not looking to add another subscription atm (absolutely understand & support the dev in spirit though!)

so far i’ve used other apps like iShell or iVim to bridge this gap :> though this post is moot now with the new iCloud features

haven't been on here in a hot minute because life has been CRAZY… but i’m popping back in to share that, with some gen-AI assistance, i’ve built **neovim-anywhere**!!

neovim-anywhere is fairly straightforward – one bash script and one shortcut (allows quick launch + input of selected text + keyboard shortcut). it takes selected text, puts it into neovim and copies the output (:wqq) to your clipboard. similar to vim-anywhere, it is unfortunately unable to paste directly into the original text field upon closing.

currently, the neovide GUI is a dependency, but i’m sure it can be adapted to a terminal

it solves a personal pain point in dealing with laggy text fields. sometimes i just want the convenience of nvim when i'm writing, say, an email – without having to open an entire terminal window and launch nvim.

hoping to get a github repo up and running soon for anyone interested. also hoping to get a more detailed blog post up, discussing the process and further thoughts, though that may come later

@msemochkin @kepano seconded! i’m envisioning being able to configure a blank slate when you launch the app on mobile, so you can type right away; similar to the app drafts

The shipwreck in Act I, Scene 1, in a 1797 engraving by Benjamin Smith after a painting by George Romney.

Act I, Scene 1 of The Tempest by William Shakespeare, in an engraving by Benjamin Smith based on a painting by George Romney. Published by J. & J. Boydell at the Shakespeare Gallery, Pall Mall & at No. 90 Cheapside. The titular tempest wrecks the ship of King Alonso. As revealed in Act I, Scene 2, the tempest was conjured by Prospero (old man, right), who sent the spirits (seen in the upper left) to create the storm. His daughter Miranda clings to him, as she does in Scene 2, begging for the lives of those on the vessel - but Prospero assures her used his magic to prevent anyone from dying, though he will lead people to believe that others have in the events to come in the play. His brother, Antonio, who usurped his place as the Duke of Milan, is on the vessel, and it is against him he seeks revenge...

any tips on how to cover up a jacket decal/print? i recently bought a jacket online and not only did it come in the wrong colour, it also has nonsensical english printed on the back 😭 (i’ve asked for a refund and it looks/should fit fine otherwise)

it says ‘Battlekid’ in slightly-curved gothic red text on white. i don’t think it can be removed, especially since it’s a solid 32cm x 10cm smack in the middle on the back.

does anyone have any recommendations for a nice one large enough to cover it? or maybe a creative way to transform the text. the jacket is spider-man themed if that helps any

A woman in tech offered to answer questions from other women about careers in tech. This was on Threads, last night. I happened to see a question another woman asked her. I want to answer the question, but (1) I’m not a woman, and (2) she didn’t ask me. It would be so. completely. out. of. place. for me to reply on that thread. So, here’s what I’m going to do.

I’m going to quote the question, anonymously, here. After all, she didn’t give me permission to quote her, so identifying here is just a no-no. And then I’m going to answer it. The answer is relevant to anyone seeking a career in tech. It’s not gender specific.

Here’s the question she asked: “Is it worth getting a cybersecurity certificate? My employer offers it but I'm not entirely sure it's worth it. I went through their data analytics bootcamp with no bites.”

First, I should tell you why I’m qualified to answer her question. I taught tech courses in colleges for seventeen years, including cybersecurity courses and CompTIA cert courses. I still teach tech and cybersecurity in private industry. Also, I was the Training Manager for a while at one of the top three US cellular companies. And I’ve hired people for tech jobs. So, yes. I’m qualified to address the subject.

Here's my answer: If your employer is willing to pay for education, use that benefit to the absolute max. Take all the training they’ll give you, if you can do so without jeopardizing your health or relationships. Even if it doesn’t directly help you get a job tomorrow, or the next day, knowledge is power. It has value. You’ll end up using that knowledge in ways you can’t even imagine or predict.

The tougher question may be, “What training should I take?” Maybe the woman who asked the question is going to max out her training benefits no matter what. Maybe her question is only about whether or not that specific cybersecurity cert is the right choice for her. Okay, I can’t answer that. Only she can. But I can help her move in the right direction with this thought…

Do you like cybersecurity? Do you want to move into cybersecurity? If you do, then take any training you can get related to cybersecurity, if someone else is willing to pay for it. Is it an instant ticket to a job offer? That wouldn’t be realistic. No cert can do that. That’s not what certs are for. (I know, the cert salespeople tell you the cert is an instant ticket to a job offer, but they’re lying. And, truthfully, you already knew that).

But if you do your networking – if you’re meeting people who can introduce you to people who can hire you – your chances are a whole lot better if you can say, “I have this cert,” than if all you can say is, “I have no training in this field.”

Take the training. If your employer is giving you the opportunity, take the training.
Best of luck to you, and keep on moving forward every day.

@TimmyMac i've heard raindrop floated a few times. i did check it out, though it didn't seem to have read-later as the main focus

what's your experience with it so far? if their read-later experience works well i may consider using it for more general bookmarking :)

2024-11-05

@nicosomb also, the URL is hq.getmatter.com! i used their free plan for about a year – great for basic tagging and storing, and their parser is one of the more powerful ones i've tested

there are native iOS/iPadOS apps + web reader, though i have the iPad version installed on my M1 for the share sheet integration

2024-11-05

@nicosomb hi! a subscription isn't something i'm personally interested in right now. particularly since i use read-later apps on-and-off through busy and free periods. no hate to them, though – the base plan of 11 euros is a steal, and something i might revisit later

the UI is a much smaller factor. i'm simply not a fan of material, though i did run wallabag's trial and it's something i could live with if i had to

wondering why invisible files are still invisible on iPadOS, rather than employing the same toggle mechanism available on Mac

would go a long way towards my obsidian workflow, especially with the new 'keep downloaded' feature i was missing (and quite frankly the reason why i switched to obsidian sync earlier this year)
