Yesterday my salmonid genomics PhD student Paolo Moccetti passed his viva - congratulations! Thank you Jamie Stevens for externalling and Jon Bolland for being a fab co-supervisor. You can find Paolo's chapters in preprint/published here, and if he didn't already have a great job to go to, I would be recommending him for post docs :)

1) New paper out! Alternative reproductive tactics and evolutionary rescueβdo low-condition males that acquire matings by other means affect the rate of adaptation? Intuitively you'd think yes: some of these males will have poor condition because of maladaptive alleles or a high mutational load, so if the alternative tactic increase the input of their genes into the next generation that should be A Bad Thing

Tonight while out on my walk, I came upon a small snake, belly up and silver in the moonlight.
At first, I did not realize it was a snake at all. It was glinting like the thick chain of a snapped necklace. I went to pick it up, and two seconds before I touched it, I realized what it was and pulled back to investigate more carefully with a little distance. Itβs in perfect shape, so Iβm not sure how it met its end, except that we had a heavy rain earlier today and it may have drowned. 1/
@davelunt πis that a challenge? Looks like 3mm, although Iβm in new territory with images.
@anboa4 imperial Allen keys? I must be younger than I thought.
My crap superpower: I can look at any Allen bolt and tell you what size Allen key you need, no trial and error required.
Our mini workshop on the Buzz on Bees was well attended and fun. So many bright people asking smart questions. #EntSoc2023

Youβve heard of elf on a shelf. In tomorrowβs lecture I present:
If you are interested, here is an open letter to the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology (Michele Donelan) to push back on some of the 'anti-woke' rhetoric and positioning seen this week at the Conservative party conference, and to stand up for EDI in science. If you are interested in reading the letter and signing please go to https://hull.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/edi_in_science and share with your networks if appropriate.
Toad said, 'Frog, you are looking quite green.'
'But I always look green,' said Frog. 'I am a frog.'

New preprint! Comments welcome: Investigating role of non-helpers in group-living thrips. Some group members "help" repair nests, but others do not. What are the non-helpers doing?
