@aehdeschaine in the past I tried to use gum arabic, but never had much luck. The honey worked really well…at least for this step. It’s currently settling so I can suck the plain water off.

I learned last week that the color of the hydrant indicates the water source. White means low pressure potable water. Other colors mean saltwater, the various reservoirs, underground cisterns, and so on.
@aehdeschaine The difference really is subtle. Especially when learning. The other positive for using transfer gold is you can easily find it in 5 sheet packs—a much more affordable way to learn. After those 5 leaves, you can decide if you want to mess with loose, or if you are okay with the results you get from transfer.
@aehdeschaine not quite a tour…but it’s a start! We have so many great collections in the Bay Area. It’s great to add one more to my connections.
@aehdeschaine @guayabito I just remember parent/transfer gold leaf exists. It’s even what I use when I teach (for the same reasons: I can’t control the air currents whereever I’m teaching). But it’s more expensive and slightly more dulled as a finished result. Especially on paper where you end up seeing the side of the gold that was stuck to the transfer paper, verses gilding a window where you see the front side of the gold through the window.
I feel dumb for forgetting that it existed…I even just thumbed past those books to get to my loose leaf a few minutes before my original post. 🤦🏼♀️
At a manuscript gathering last night at Standford—a Korean manuscript was shared. The whole thing was written/drawn in shell gold—even the guide lines. It was the most beautiful and shiny shell gold I have seen. It has convinced me I need to sit down and grind my shell even more! Guess I know my weekend tv watching activity.
The photos do not do it justice! The shell gold was so good it almost looked like flat gold leaf.

My house is so cold! I’m gilding diplomas today, which means no heater & no open windows. I’ve got to control the air flow, or my gold leaf floats away. I’m constantly in awe of decorators/painters that gild outside!

We will be looking at English Roundhand of the early 18th century—a transitional period in calligraphy, when it was still written with a very small edged pen. This class is great for calligraphy beginners. Or broad edge calligraphers that want to start looking at scripts, or pointed pen calligraphers who want to start working with broadedge pens.

@aehdeschaine @MerlyBlack the book has been on my radar, but I haven’t had time to study Illumination recently. But I hadn’t thought about an interlibrary loan…but that’s a great idea! I’ll try to remember it next time I focus on illumination again.
