If you are thinking this fall in the northern hemisphere is abnormally warm, you are not wrong.

>Two things are primarily driving this. The first is #ClimateChange which is mostly caused by humans burning #fossilfuels. And .. this heat is also driven by #ElNiño a natural, cyclical #climate pattern which drives up global temperatures.

What if you found out that a #bird you saw today is scheduled to completely vanish from its #habitat in a few years?

How would you react if you learned that the key reason why that bird's #species will vanish is due to wide scale, global #deforestation ?

#NewYorkCity ’s flood: A wet double whammy

>#climatechange is worsening #floods in two important ways. It is exacerbating #rainfall, which can quickly lead to flash #flooding due to the city’s lack of porous surfaces. It’s also slowly raising the level of the #ocean, which frequently intrudes onto the city’s surfaces during storms and high tide, a phenomenon known as coastal flooding.

>.. scientists who study coastal flooding actually consider [the] flood to be “mild.”

🌳🌍 Natural #forests are vital in carbon storage, outperforming plantations. Afforestation and proforestation, using mixed species, can mitigate emissions.

But caution! #Tree planting is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Protecting existing forests is key.

Let's be wise in our approach to a greener future. 🌍🌳

🙄😳 The #NewJersey Department of Environmental Protection has charged ITSELF with damaging the habitat of two threatened bird species that IT IS BY LAW RESPONSIBLE TO PROTECT. The department was clearing vegetation and soil on 3 acres of public lands, but ended up destroying protected #wildfile #habitat, #wetlands and removing mature #trees. The agency issued a violation to ITS OWN Division of Fish and Wildlife and threatened penalties. 😳🙄

FILE - A barred owl is shown in the woods outside Philomath, Ore., Dec. 13, 2017. On April 6, 2023, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection issued a violation notice against one of its own sub-divisions accusing it of wrongly clearing 15 acres of a wildlife management area in southwestern New Jersey. The work was designed to create habitat for the American woodcock, but wound up destroying habitat for the barred owl, which is threatened, and the red-shouldered hawk, which is endangered.

Did you know that Roaring Rock Park has mature trees that provide an enjoyable hiking experience, shade for the trout in Brass Castle creek, AND assist in sequestering carbon in the fight against #ClimateChange?

It is a shame that there are initiatives to cut down mature trees on public lands, across the USA and in NJ.

Read on about this issue and what you can do to help.
