Lure of folklore

How are folklore and fables used in literature and what fascinates us in these themes? Are there hidden gems that should be adapted, what is missing? The panelists also talk about their favorite folklore examples and literature that uses them.

Paul Krugman engages with Ada Palmer in a thought-provoking dialogue on her book, "Inventing the Renaissance." They argue that the Renaissance is an evolving process rather than a defined era, influenced by diverse academic perspectives. Palmer critiques modern interpretations of figures like Machiavelli and emphasizes the cultural flourishing of Renaissance Italy as a complex narrative of power and legitimacy.

@ohalexsimmons If you want some meaty SciFi that has a bunch of history/philosophy in it, I'd recommend the Terra Ignota series by #AdaPalmer (who is also a historian, and on Mastodon).

I have finished reading Seven Surrenders by Ada Palmer. When I finished the first book in the series (darkfriend.social/@hybridhavoc) I said that it felt incomplete without this second one. Now that I have finished it I can say that these are really phenomenal books, especially for anybody that is into political intrigue and sci-fi.

It feels like a more proper stopping place, allowing me to move on and maybe come back to the series at a later date.

I #AmReading Seven Surrenders by Ada Palmer. Book 2 of Terra Ignota.
-----
It is a world in which near-instantaneous travel from continent to continent is free to all. And it is a world in which, unknown to most, the entire social order is teetering on the edge of collapse.

Because even in utopia, humans will conspire. And also because something new has arisen: Bridger, the child who can bring inanimate objects to conscious life.

Book cover for Seven Surrenders by Ada Palmer. Features a distant look at a multi-storied ancient Roman-looking building, seen as through fog. There is a futuristic flying vehicle flying close by. Closer to the frame there are two figures in cloaks, one in a red cloak with white accents and the other in a white cloak with red accents. One or both may be wearing a helmet as well, and there is what looks like a landed vehicle nearby as well.

There is a quote on the cover from Sherwood Smith, author of Inda, which reads: "Ferociously intelligent, narrated in a ravishing voice, this is the kind of science fiction I've been craving for years."

I #AmReading Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer. Been on my TBR for a while now.
-----
Mycroft Canner is a convict. For his crimes he is required, as is the custom of the 25th century, to wander the world being as useful as he can to all he meets. Carlyle Foster is a sensayer—a spiritual counselor in a world that has outlawed the public practice of religion, but which also knows that the inner lives of humans cannot be wished away.

Book cover for Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer. It features a landscape of an earth-like word. There is a large mountain with a man-made structure built into the cliffside. There are futuristic flying vehicles flying among a flock of birds, angled towards the mountain.

The cover also features a blur from Robert Charles Wilson which reads: "The best science fiction novel I've read in a long while."

@FantasticMrScott If you love the sort of dense world-building that Neal Stephenson does, I'd highly recommend #AdaPalmer's Terra Ignota series.
