How do you talk about animals' emotions in educational contexts? How do people react when you ask how the animal feels about what is going on? And how do you get your message across teaching in different contexts?

Are you a researcher in animal behaviour, or a teacher who works with animals in class? Come join us at our Training School April 20-21, 2026 in Romania on talking about animal emotions in educational contexts! Details in flyer.

Flyer for a training school tilted "Co-learning through multiple perspectives: Communication about animal affect in educational contexts". Where:= University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, Cluj-Napoca, Romania When: April 20-21 2026. Bulleted list with Interactive lectures, hands-on activities and workshops, networking opportunities, funded spaces for travel, stay and participation (limited number). Coordinators Alina Rusu, Helen Lewis, Rebecca Nordquist. Application Deadline Jan 23, 2026. More information and application affect.evo@gmail.comAs part of our work in the Affect-Evo COST action WG2, we are very pleased to organize a Two - day training school on communication about animal affect in educational contexts (Co-learning through multiple perspectives), in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, from Monday April 19, 2026 – Tuesday April 20, 2026.
We will have informative lectures on how to communicate on complex or sensitive topics with categories of persons involved in educational contexts, interactive lectures on insightful topics coming from various perspectives (ethology, philosophy, veterinary medicine, psychology, animal-assisted education) and hands-on activities to practice these skills. This TS will give you tools to take on or improve your communication skills, and help expand your scientific network in the field.

A limited number of funded spaces are available to attend this training school for participants with affiliations in COST countries, with a preference to young researchers (defined by COST as <40 years of age) and inclusiveness target country participants. Funding is based on COST rules for travel and daily allowances for Training Schools. Please note that you can only apply for reimbursement for costs which are not covered by another source (i.e. your travel cannot be reimbursed twice).

"We hypothesized that the calling behavior of animals during the eclipse would mimic periods of low light, such as post-dusk, and that a measurable shift in soundscape activity would occur during the eclipse period. Our results showed significant variation in some metrics between days, with the highest biophonic activity observed on the day of the eclipse. We did not find differences between the time of the eclipse and the days before and after with respect to acoustic complexity."

I spent the day manually labeling frames for #DeepLabCut ( #MachineLearning model to track #animals in videos).
Incredibly mind-numbing, but hopefully my new model will be good enough to work through the terabytes of videos.
If the model can actually track up to 18 piglets, that would be amazing!

The White Swan in the Black Water

Like the hoot of a coot, this one was a difficult shoot. The swan floated in near darkness — the kind that tricks even the most advanced metering systems. The white of its feathers reflected light so intensely that every automatic setting wanted to blow out the highlights. So, back to full manual it was.

Shot in Park Sonsbeek in Arnhem with my Canon 5D Mark IV and Sigma 100–400, I carefully balanced the exposure — 1/250 s, f/6.3, ISO 12800. A few test frames later, I found the sweet spot where the white plumage stayed detailed without losing the subtle ripples in the near-black water.

A bit of contrast, a touch of color correction, and that was it. The rest is natural — the quiet precision of light meeting patience. Sometimes photography feels less like taking a picture and more like measuring reality in fractions of a second.

Photography, after all, is just another way of studying light and life.

Two species of spiders 🕷️🕸️ have been observed for the first time weaving larger “decoy” models of themselves to protect themselves from predators. Sometimes, these decoys, often arranged at the centre of the web, may be up to 10 times as large as their creators.

🦈⚔️ Researchers in #Mexico's Gulf of California filmed #orcas hunting juvenile great white #sharks using a sophisticated strategy that exploits the sharks' tonic immobility response. The orcas coordinate attacks to flip sharks upside down, then harvest their energy-rich livers and share the prize among their pod, including calves.

I saw this tapir on the riverbank. He started feeding, unaware of my presence. An incredible sighting; the animal never detected me, allowing me to observe him in his natural environment with completely undisturbed behavior.
