Preflight ✈️ run before flying to San Diego tomorrow for my first marathon this Sunday! After a super demanding week I’m feeling a bit worked over, so I hope two days of chilling and seeing my sis in SD will provide some needed restoration.
It’s been a truly inspiring training cycle with milestones I never expected to hit in my life, let alone post-colectomy. This was my first 100 mile month plus 34 miles on the trails.
Last infusion of my 40s … then a 5k run #Crohns #Remicade #AutoimmuneAthlete
Netflix should have dialed me up for this one #AutoimmuneAthlete #crohnsdisease
8 years ago I set off on a journey to gain some agency in my Crohn’s disease journey and went from zero to a 50 mile bike ride in 6 weeks at the Sea Otter Classic. This year, I’ve run 🏃♂️ about half of this SAME route 🤯

I had more than one Dune sequel this weekend. This one was running 15 miles (my longest ever!) on the path where my transformation via cycling began almost exactly 8 years ago.

I had the most middle-aged accident carrying it a bag of broken Chemex glass- caught my ecotrek trail pants and ripped a hole requiring 3-layers of stitches. Marathon training is on a temporary hold #AutoimmuneAthlete #CrohnsLife #Ibd #crohns
The end of 2022 was full of uncertainty (and some post-surgery complications) but I believed that a healthier future was ahead, so I went about forging that vision for 2023. As I stood on the top of the hill we’ve dubbed “Big G” and thought of all of the progress made this year, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone that made it easier to believe and do the work.
I’m looking at 2024 and thinking about how to share more of this with the world.

It was a wild year coming off my full colectomy in December of ‘22. I was in recovery/rebuild mode all year (226 days!) and closed it out with a half-marathon PR. I couldn’t have done any of it without my Fleet Feet Monterey tribe and my coach Menachem Brodie of Human Vortex Training - look coach, I spent 26% of my efforts in strength training! 🙌🙏 🤯

Yesterday was amazing—I set a personal record that was 10 minutes faster than my previous half-marathon time, finishing in 2:05:57.
To celebrate, thanks to a stroke of bad scheduling, I had a Remicade infusion today. But, I got to show off my medal at Stanford!

For part 2 of my conversation with Menachem Brodie, we focus on training, the power of a movement practice on health, and how to find and collaborate with a health team and coach.
This was probably my all-time favorite conversation on training with an autoimmune disease — we cover a lot of ground but get a chance to talk about how we started working together and how that's evolved.

T’was the night before the big race and all through the house, I’m remembering stuff to pack, while sitting on my couch. My number all pinned to my shirt and shoe laced fixed, I set about nutrition and magic potions to mix. Pre-race drinks and lotions, ketones for fuel, I’ve got some Skratch gummies and a recovery drink too. All that’s left is to fall asleep so I can awake early to make coffee to drink. … cont’d below

Last week's training required some fluidity, but ultimately, I think I got it exactly where I wanted it, and it was the final training week before the big race at Big Sur this Saturday!

My training update for last week is a bit late, but it includes some key insights into where I was at after having the flu, realizing I had some energy issues, and my best long run, maybe ... ever?
