#EE undergrads adore their #complex numbers. They use and abuse the \(j = \sqrt{-1}\) (no, not \(i\)) like an Uber driver uses and abuses his beloved Prius.

Despite this familiarity and affinity, however, these students initially fail to appreciate fully the essence of complex numbers because, although most "classic EE" undergrad subjects employ complex numbers, that use sprang from notational compactness and mathematical convenience, not from necessity.

But when the students eventually take the mandatory course on #quantum mechanics, they quickly come to realise that without the \(i\), there would be no quantum mechanics—and, by extension, no "modern EE".
