“Just as we transformed our communities in the last hundred years to center and prioritize car movement, in the next hundred years we can, if we want to, build an entirely different future.” Anna Letitia Zivarts; When Driving is not an option.
This is a powerful message. We built this. It was not always like this. We can change it.

If you demand that trains run at a profit, you must also ask for highways to run a profit. Otherwise, you distort the market.

I am afraid that one big obstacle towards overcoming in the US is and I am not sure how that can be resolved.

Does #CarDependence Make People Unsatisfied With Life? Evidence From a U.S. National Survey - ScienceDirect sciencedirect.com/science/arti “Our results show that beyond a certain point, increases in car dependence yield a decrease in people’s satisfaction with life. For instance, we find that, in a typical week, relying on a car for more than 50 percent of the time for out-of-home activities is associated with a decrease in life satisfaction.

America's "love affair with the car" is really more like an arranged marriage.

When you know the history, some of which covered in here:

Of all the bizarre decisions we've made as a culture, establishing a daily norm of transporting ~100kg of human inside ~1,000kg of metal propelled by tiny explosions has to be the weirdest.

Something is wrong with the people of . The number of my neighbours I see drive their garbage bag to the dumpster is ridiculous. The absolute longest distance it could be is 50m (and I'm pretty sure that's an overestimate). has been instilled into these people to the point of helplessness.

Despite the heat, I went on a tour to the Neely-Soames Historic Homestead. It was built in 1885 and is one of the oldest homes in . That’s pretty much all I could find out. It’s a nice spot. The ride itself was ok (60km, 600m elev. gain). However, Kent presented itself rather hostile to bicycles. Ostensibly Kent has a bicycle advisory board but I could not see any evidence it does anything. Maybe it is just for mobilitywashing.

Yeah, like so many other things including #CarDependence!
At least the process of mowing a lawn smells nice if it's not overwhelmed with gas fumes.

GDOT is widening SR-9 which runs through Alpharetta, Milton, Cumming, Roswell, and Sandy Springs.

They are currently working on a section that goes through Alpharetta and MIlton and up into Forsyth. They are taking it from 2 to 4 lanes (not great) and planning to add multi-use paths (pretty good).

Locals are of course upset because it will... require them to redo the landscaping around their subdivision entrance.

The quotes are... incredibly telling.

“It’s not really making sense,” she said. “Based upon what I’ve seen in the 20-plus years that I’ve been here, I have not seen much use of sidewalks in this area. I don’t want to see this area turn to all concrete.”

People outside cars are invisible to the folks. "I never see people walking" is just code for "I've never bothered to notice".

Also, the neighborhood entrance is across the road from a shopping center with Khols, Target, petco, and 22 acres of parking lot.

The Netherlands (like many other countries) had a huge traffic safety issue in the 70s. Thanks to decisive actions, the situation got a lot better by the 90s. This shows that in just two decades, a lot can be improved if the people want it. Imagine your area in 20 years. It could be a lot less car dependent, safer, and livable if you ask for it.
