Im herbstlichen Wald des Ätna liegen frische Maronen (die essbaren Früchte der Edelkastanie) verstreut auf den schwarzen Lavasteinen. Kastanien sind seit Jahrhunderten ein Grundnahrungsmittel in der Region und genießen hier besonderen Ruf wegen ihres dichten Fruchtfleisches und des mild-süßlichen Geschmacks, der durch das vulkanische Klima geprägt wird. Ich sammle einige Hände voll um sie später für ein schmackhaftes, selbstgesammeltes Abendessen zu rösten.

Sweet ! I keep finding them on our walks.

They never used to grow naturally at my altitude. The big old ones planted intentionally rarely bore nuts.

This year, EVERYWHERE.

(I'd already filled a bag to bursting before finding these bigger, nicer ones)

Sweet chestnuts fallen to the ground. A mass of spiky light greenish brown husks, glossy dark red-brown nuts, and dead leaves viewed from above. Some green plants have re-sprouted due to the unseasonably warm weather, and a few blades of fresh green grass too.

The chestnuts are falling off the tree. Now, it's a race between humans and squirrels to grab the nuts from their vicious burrs. You need to wear thorn resistant shoes to walk in that mess.
