Winter pruning on one of my espalier apple trees this month. I missed the summer pruning this year, so I had to play a little catch up.

A young fruit tree with bare winter branches stands in front of a brick house with sage green shutters. The tree is surrounded by brown mulch and appears unpruned, with multiple crossing branches growing in various directions. The same fruit tree after winter pruning, now with a cleaner, more open structure. Branches have been selectively removed to create better spacing and form. The tree stands in the same location against the brick house with sage green shutters.

UK Tescos has dormant #FruitTrees and bushes in stock again: #AppleTrees (various including Discovery), #PearTrees (Conference), cherry, gooseberries, redcurrants, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries - so tempting but what would grow well in the remaining space in the garden…

These are 2 of the rad men who showed up today. Almost all of our workshops have a huge females over males attendees ratio - even smaller margins for people who don't use any gender markers. Our community orchard supervisor is a proud & out trans person. Our #LifecyclesProjectSociety is almost fully staffed by #queers. In fact, I'm one of a very tiny portion of non-queers - we are the minority!

If you're interested in learning more about my food security work with LifeCycles Project Society, check out our website or feel free to ask me questions, right here.

I love working with Ruby 😀
She's our newest young intern, working as an orchard assistant. Ruby is also neurodivergent on the spectrum & is disabled too - we understand each other very well & work well together✌️
We met a year ago, at past volunteer work parties. I started working for LifeCycles, in August. My contract runs til end of March.

Lychee growers' creative desserts and drinks offset a dismal harvest
By Jennifer Nichols

Freeze-dried desserts, lychee ice cream, sorbets, and frozen juice are keeping family owned farms open to the public longer, despite a dramatic drop in the Sunshine Coast lychee harvest.

I picked some apricots from my tree, this one was irresistible and only partially made it inside 😋

We decided to be a bit experimental/lazy with the apple tree at the end of the season and just leave some apples on there. The idea being that it would hopefully give the birds something to snack on in the colder months and we wouldnt have to pick and throw away apples that weren't great for doing anything with.

Gotta say its been a big success. So many birds visiting our garden here in the winter months, especially now as the earth is covered in snow. The kids and the cat have become avid winter bird watchers!

Some years ago I found a pomegranate tree beaten into submission as a hedge so I took a cutting.
Rooted it in a pot then transplanted it into the ground in [River without End] and it sat stunned for two years then realised that there were no more restrictions on growth and has now started producing fruit despite the 35°C heat.

How to Create a Backyard #FoodForest with #Fruit & #NutTrees 🌳🥜🍎

Published by Ty Ty Plant Nursery, LLC, on
June 4, 2025

"A backyard food forest is a #sustainable, low-maintenance #gardening method that mimics a natural #forest #ecosystem—except instead of wild plants, you’re growing delicious fruits, nuts, #herbs, and more. It’s a long-term investment in your health, your land, and your ability to grow your own nutrient-rich food without relying on chemicals or constant labor.

"Whether you have a sprawling #backyard or a small suburban plot, you can design your own food forest using fruit and nut trees as the foundation. Here’s how to get started.

🌿 What Is a Food Forest?

"A food forest (also called a #ForestGarden) is a multi-layered growing system that mirrors the structure of a natural forest. It includes:

- Canopy layer – Large fruit and nut trees (like pecans, walnuts, pears) [I WOULD USE CAUTION WITH WALNUTS! They can be poisonous to other plants!]

- Sub-canopy layer – Dwarf or semi-dwarf fruit trees (like plums, figs, or apples)

- Shrub layer – Berries and bush fruits (like raspberries, blueberries, elderberries)

- Herbaceous layer – Culinary and medicinal herbs (like mint, comfrey, lemon balm)

- Groundcover layer – Spreading, edible or soil-building plants (like strawberries or clover)

- Root layer – Underground crops (like garlic, onions, or horseradish)

- Vertical/vine layer – Climbing plants (like grapes or kiwis)

"Together, these layers maximize space, diversify harvests, and support soil health and #biodiversity."
