And #forgejo already has a level of #ActivityPub federation support, like for federated stars:

domaindrivenarchitecture.org/p

Hopefully with @forgefed adoption on the roadmap too, where this open standard supported by @NGIZero has been significantly progressed, but needs implementers in active feedback loops to refine and mature the specs.

I'm finally moving over to Radicle (radicle.xyz) instead of switching to another centralized code forge (like GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg, etc.). I definitely love the idea behind a #P2P code forge and I'm hopeful for Radicle's future, but I do have some reservations starting off:

1) Despite talking a lot about freedom and privacy in the tutorial, the group building Radicle (radworks.org/) is planning to sell hosting and make a profit via an Ethereum-based cryptocurrency (tally.xyz/gov/radworks) as well as NFTs and smart contracts. Some big Libertarian red flags there.

2) At some point there was a Swiss nonprofit "Radicle Foundation", but this now seems to be a for-profit venture (see radicle.xyz/history). I wish it could just be a nonprofit.

3) In the user guide chapter on private repos (radicle.xyz/guides/user), it says that I need to use a public DNS address trusted seed node to share the repo. I understand there's no DHT here, but I hope it's not too much of a pain to run this over my local network instead of the internet. (And yeah, I know I can use git locally, I just want to test Radicle locally.)

Overall, I think that if radworks turns out to be evil it will be a way easier transition to fork Radicle than it has been to leave GitHub, but I still wish I didn't have to worry.

Any #Developers still using #GitHub for their personal #OpenSource, #FLOSS, #FOSS projects at this point are sending a clear message that they are for really heinous things or are willfully ignorant ioo.

To be clear, if you are still there you seem to be in favour of the #ICE deportations, the #Genocide in #Gaza and #Palestine, #LLMs, especially #CoPilot stealing code (especially yours) and probably other bad things. If you didn't know about this well now you do.

Please use #CodeBerg, #ForgeJo or even a #SelfHosted #GitLab instead (if there is anything ethically wrong with GitLab please let us know.)

It's easy to move to CodeBerg as they have an automated way to do so.

If you're part of a team please strongly suggest moving to another #CodeForge software.

Do you like @radicle but aren’t exactly enthusiastic about self-hosting your #codeForge?

Talk to us to find out about a hosted #radicle node offering!

Have us spin up your team’s seed node and CI runners and move your code to the global #peerToPeer network!

@ayo did you come across #radicle yet? Looks really intriguing. They did a lot of R&D, seem to have nailed the #protocols now. I'm going to try it for my next #opensource project

"The decision to move to Forgejo as the new git forge has reached a new stage. Fedora Linux’s leadership has decided to choose Forgejo as their preferred git forge replacement. There are numerous factors involved in this decision and this article will discuss them, present some background on the process, and invite one more chance for feedback before the formal Fedora Council vote."

#TIL about #GitWorkshop;

"Gitworkshop.dev, git-remote-nostr and ngit are tools to enable code collaboration over nostr. Gitworkshop.dev provides a visual interface to discuss proposals and open issues. git-remote-nostr enables proposal creation, review and incorporation using standard git tooling. ngit handles repository setup and advanced proposal submission."

Radicle has reached v1.0. It's a "distributed code collaboration stack" – local first nodes that connect p2p and stores everything in git, identities are DID-based Ed25519 keys.

Gitlab has a backlog item for enabling #ActivityPub support.

There isn't a lot of consistency in this stuff yet, don't know if they'll conform to what #ForgeFed is designing, or just aim for "can subscribe in Mastodon"

(really, they should be supporting both)

ForgeFed is a project to work on federation for software forges, built on top of ActivityPub:

“imagine you could host your Git repos anywhere you want…but still be able to open issues and submit pull requests against repos hosted elsewhere”

Instead of focusing on being a #codeforge, #github decided they wanted to be a chat bot. 😅 I love my AI helpers like #tabnine. But I also think making it an assistant is key. Not the sole contributor. 😑

Time will tell with this move. But on the plus side, maybe people give more a look at #sourcehut, #codeberg, and other options. 😎

Seriously you can feed your family and not use Microshaft and CloudGlare. Some people think they will not survive without selling themselves (and others) out to monopolists, that is crap.

It would not surprise us if they have investments in #CAGEMAFIA and a just lying to our faces, "I wish I could switch to another #codeForge but all the [bots] I know are on there".

Piss off.

Had it with that attitude. Go affix a blue and yellow avatar, too because we all know you invest in #weaponsIndustry.

Does anyone have a #Forgejo or #OneDev instance they'd be willing to let me and my team join? I need a general-purpose #CodeForge, but the treehouse.systems mail server appears to be down, so people can't verify their account to join me.

I like to start my projects privately and only open-source them when they're ready. And I'm currently working on a modding project that would be illegal to make the source code public for. So Codeberg is out of the question for me for most projects.

Speaking of how easy it is to learn how to triage Issues, a message from the Forgejo devs, who develop the code forge software under by CodeBerg.org

> it would really make a difference if you could (or know someone who could) triage issues in codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo/i

Anyone willing to volunteer? All necessary training and mentoring provided. You don't need any experience with anything but being a human who knows how to use a web browser.

Microsoft GitHub locks searching a projects code behind authentication. Results show `?` and clicking takes you to a login. You shouldn't be required to have an Microsoft account to search LGPL code.

Pro-tip: if you value freedom and accessibility, move your code base elsewhere

Been thinking more of owning my #codeforge again.

Nothing wrong with offboarding. Just, you don't have a guarantee of how long your host exists.😅 And no, using #github is not the answer.😑

Make mirrors everywhere sure. But your main host should be something you control. Something corps can't build their ML products from.
