🇺🇸 The common tern (Sterna hirundo) is a graceful seabird widely distributed across Europe, Asia, and North America, often found along coasts, rivers, and inland lakes. It measures about 31 to 35 centimeters in length with a wingspan of 70 to 80 centimeters and weighs between 90 and 150 grams. In breeding plumage, adults are recognized by their black cap, slender red bill tipped with black, and pale grey plumage. Their flight is elegant and buoyant, with frequent hovering before plunging into the water to catch small fish. Common terns are highly vocal, their sharp “kee-arr” calls often heard above colonies. They are long-distance migrants, spending winters along African, South American, and southern Asian coasts.

🇩🇪 Die Flussseeschwalbe (Sterna hirundo) ist ein anmutiger Seevogel, der in Europa, Asien und Nordamerika verbreitet ist und häufig an Küsten, Flüssen und Binnenseen vorkommt. Sie wird etwa 31 bis 35 Zentimeter lang, erreicht eine Spannweite von 70 bis 80 Zentimetern und wiegt zwischen 90 und 150 Gramm. Zur Brutzeit sind erwachsene Tiere gut an der schwarzen Kopfkappe, dem schlanken roten Schnabel mit schwarzer Spitze und dem hellgrauen Gefieder zu erkennen. Typisch ist ihr eleganter, schwebender Flug, oft mit kurzem Rütteln, bevor sie ins Wasser stürzt, um kleine Fische zu erbeuten. Flussseeschwalben sind sehr ruffreudig; ihre scharfen „krii-ährr“-Rufe sind über Kolonien weithin zu hören. Sie sind Langstreckenzieher und verbringen den Winter an den Küsten Afrikas, Südamerikas und Südasiens.

Zwei Vögel fliegen über einem Gewässer, wobei ein Vogel auf den anderen herabzublicken scheint. Das Gefieder ist weiß bis hellgrau. Der Kopf oberhalb der Augen ist schwarz. Der Schnabel ist rot gefärbt mit einer schwarzen Spitze. Das Wasser im Hintergrund ist leicht wellig.

A Common Tern perched on a post in Mill Pond at Pensthorpe. I was watching it call out for a while, it was only calling when another Tern was swooping nearby.

I missed the picture but the other Tern came and fed it a fish. Not looking like a juvenile I was confused until I watched the first episode of Springwatch that said this was courting behaviour!

It was good to see that the Common Terns had returned to Brandon Marsh by the time I visited at the end of April. I took several photos of this posing pair, only afterwards realising that the male had presented the female with a small fish, in act of ‘courtship feeding.’

Another chilly day, but I went for a short walk on the coast anyway. I spotted a pier and decided to walk to the end of it to see the view. Before I got there, a tern landed on a pole near me and shrieked and stared at me. I am not fluent in Ternish, but I think it said "Stop right there!"

I did.

At first I thought it was an Arctic tern, but no – just a common tern. I took a few photos and left the tern to enjoy the view in peace. It started chatting with another common tern that landed below it on the pier, presumably its partner.
