Zwei Vögel fliegen über einem Gewässer, wobei ein Vogel auf den anderen herabzublicken scheint. Das Gefieder ist weiß bis hellgrau. Der Kopf oberhalb der Augen ist schwarz. Der Schnabel ist rot gefärbt mit einer schwarzen Spitze. Das Wasser im Hintergrund ist leicht wellig.

Two birds are flying over a body of water, with one bird appearing to look down on the other. The plumage is white to light gray. The head above the eyes is black. The beak is red with a black tip. The water in the background is slightly wavy.

A Common Tern perched on a post in Mill Pond at Pensthorpe. I was watching it call out for a while, it was only calling when another Tern was swooping nearby.

I missed the picture but the other Tern came and fed it a fish. Not looking like a juvenile I was confused until I watched the first episode of Springwatch that said this was courting behaviour!

It was good to see that the Common Terns had returned to Brandon Marsh by the time I visited at the end of April. I took several photos of this posing pair, only afterwards realising that the male had presented the female with a small fish, in act of ‘courtship feeding.’

Three photos combined in one image, each showing the same long wooden perch in one of the lakes at Brandon Marsh, and each showing a pair of Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) in various stages of courtship display and ritual. The terns, gull-like birds, are mostly white in colour, with pale grey wings, black caps, and orange legs and beaks. Their beaks are narrow and pointed, and their forked tails give them the alternative name of 'sea swallows'. In the first photo (top), the female (on the left) is facing the male and 'bowing' while the male, on the right, stands with his head held high. In pic 2, the female is closer to the male, with her beak open; the male has a small fish in his beak. In pic 3 (bottom), the birds are standing next to each other; the male is standing with his neck stretched up and beak pointing upwards, while the female has also raised her head and is holding the fish, provided by the male, in her beak.

Twee visdiefjes op twee paaltjes, de linker staat van de zijkant op de foto met de snavel naar de rechter toe. De rechter vogel is zich aan het poetsen.
De paaltjes staan in weiland.

Another chilly day, but I went for a short walk on the coast anyway. I spotted a pier and decided to walk to the end of it to see the view. Before I got there, a tern landed on a pole near me and shrieked and stared at me. I am not fluent in Ternish, but I think it said "Stop right there!"

I did.

At first I thought it was an Arctic tern, but no – just a common tern. I took a few photos and left the tern to enjoy the view in peace. It started chatting with another common tern that landed below it on the pier, presumably its partner.
