A subtle yet powerful shift in perception becomes viable when we stop referring to these tools broadly as “AI” and start calling them what they truly are—Large Language Models (LLMs).

“AI” can trigger anxiety, competition, or a sense of threat. “LLM,” being neutral, descriptive, and precise, invites curiosity, collaboration, and a friendlier relationship with the human mind.

Small reframings often lead to big shifts.

I was not expecting this footnote in the new Chicago Manual of Style. Thank you, editors of #CMOS18, for modeling #ConsciousLanguage.

"5.255: Making Conscious Choices…Here we draw on the term 'conscious language' as used by Karen Yin, founder of the Conscious Style Guide website." ❤️

Screenshot with "The Chicago Manual of Style" in black on yellow, with "Online" in red beneath it. To the right of this block of color is an entry: 5: Grammar and Usage > 5.255: Making Conscious Choices. The footnote reads, "Here we draw on the term 'conscious language' as used by Karen Yin, founder of the Conscious Style Guide website (see bibliog. 1.4)."

I had a lovely time talking to Melanie Padgett Powers on her "Association Station" podcast about conscious language and why it's important for associations (and all writers) to consider how their messaging might affect their audience. "The need to avoid ableist language is thus not about avoiding hurt feelings. Instead, it’s about confronting grave, violent, oppressive, and ongoing stakes."
