#Copyleft

I sometimes see game assets or animation assets on a site that claims the assets are free and are under a #copyleft or even an #OSI-approved license. Yet when I try to download them, I need to have an account to download them. Then they're not free. The site owners can remove the asset or remove access to it, which doesn't make them free. If I can do what I want with that asset under the license, then I should be able to download them without an account. #GameAssets

#OpenScience is not #freescience Perché #copyleft, diritto di ripubblicazione e contratti "trasformativi" sono cure solo palliative, talvolta ingegnose e talvolta no, per la servitù della ricerca, openaccessrepository.it/record

Do you want corporations to misuse your work? Why help them spy and steal from millions of users like yourself?

How about using a #copyleft license in your #rust :rust_ferris: projects.

Simply modify your Cargo.toml file.

On terminology.

Re-license - one changes the license. E,g., proprietary to .

Dual-license - the user chooses which license (e.g, or proprietary — not both)

Mixed-license - several compatible licenses in the same work. E.g. file A is a permissive, file B is copyleft. If you can untangle each, then only that files license matters.

A large majority of people confuse privacy with data protection. And lately I'm noticing an uproar of ideologies that claim to be pro-freedom in one way or another, but which threaten freedom as a whole. I think there is a certain copyright mentality to them. Certain misunderstanding of ownership which makes fighting for freed...

My #Copyleft #AI find of today is a fully replicatable reimplementation of the #Whisper speech recognition model, using only #CreativeCommons Attribution and #PublicDomain data sources: huggingface.co/espnet/owsm_v3.…

I generally enjoy it when I find a fully #copyleft abiding #AI model - it shows that indiscriminate, non-consensual scouring of the web is not mandatory to create useful AI applications.

@lwriemen @thelinuxEXP yes, I have some misgivings about OSI, too. And I'd also prefer that we didn't pander to corporate interests by using 'open source' over free or #libre software. I'm definitely of the #copyleft persuasion. To my mind, the only purpose of 'weak' open source licenses is to be easily exploitable by proprietary (corporate) interests. But, my ultimate goal is for any software not implementing *open standards* to be effectively eliminated by regulators. Let's ditch proprietary.

“But if we have to respect #copyright and seek informed specific #consent when we grab data for training our #GenAI system, how can we possibly extract #monopoly profit!?”

Same tone as

“But if we have to respect #copyright and grant the same #SoftwareFreedom in the #copyleft works we redistribute to others, how can we possibly extract #monopoly profit!?”

Don't be fooled by the #CrocodileTears when big-tech bullies complain they need to violate the rights of others. The answer is: “You can't.”

“The primary purpose of AGPL appears to be creating barriers for public cloud providers, which likely guarantees that major sponsors like Amazon and Google will continue to support Valkey.” - Vadim Tkachenko, Percona co-founder.

Respectfully, no. This is not the purpose or the reason.

And if you were hoping that the #copyleft from #AGPL would somehow prevent #Redis from relicensing back to SSPL or worse, you might want to read their #CLA, while remembering what #Hashicorp did:

#Redis is #FreeSoftware again; specifically #AGPL !

Unclear what this means for the forks Valkey (BSD-3-Clause) and Redict (LGPL).

I've spent the plurality of my career enforcing copylefts such as #GPL

I apologize; this sounds arrogant, but:

I know more about methods, efficacy, & options for enforcing #copyleft terms than anyone else.

I'm absolutely sure a copyleft-style clause (like that in the so-called
“Hippocratic License”) would never curtail immoral behavior in use of software if that behavior doesn't relate to software itself (i.e.,copying, modifying, redistributing, reinstalling, deploying).

@jbqueru My key recommendation to #FOSS projects is to use a #copyleft license, but then also have both a strong Code of Conduct for contributors. & a pledge that indicates the project will not accept feature requests or support requests from unethical actors in other areas of endeavor.

The biggest problem isn't the FOSS license doesn't stop unrelated bad behavior by this horrible companies: it's that the FOSS community gladly gives them free-as-in-labor help to solve their issues.
