In today's in Lisbon my introduction to Discrete Global Grid Systems was elected as best presentation.

I am grateful to the organisers and the participants. But this wouldnt have happened without the work from those that for over thirty years have been pushing ever closer to the end user. I stand on the shoulders of giants.

The prize was a fine copy of this historical map, "Portugal laying down", in which West is up.

An historical map of Portugal where West is up.

@geomob the next speaker laid out the fascinating story of Discrete Global Grid Systems, which can revolutionise the way we represent and combine data in the surface of the world #dggs #standatds #datacube #h3 #geomoblx

Justus made a great intro on using #DGGS through #xarray #xdggs at the #Pangeo showcase talk. Xdggs is now in a stage where you can use it fairly robustly with #HEALPIX and #H3. Other integrations like for #DGGRID are developed as separate plugins.

Great new paper in #BigEarthData on #DGGS practical application on #landuse mapping at #ManaakiWhenua #LandcareResearch New Zealand. While they used #H3 due to available tooling they described the generalisable methodology really well.

#DGGS #API is for a new and innovative way of sharing and indexing #geospatial data, that works with multi-resolution location identifiers across scales on the whole globe. API ergonomics are important for wide uptake and usability, open for feedback 🌍🌐

Checking in from the #OGC @opengeospatial member meeting in Goyang, South Korea. Here for #DGGS. Side info #OvertureMaps is a principal member now and Bentley has acquired Cesium 3d globe software

Dggrid | Anaconda.org You can now install #DGGRID on Apple Silicon/ osx-arm64 architecture. I also managed to update to the stable 8.1 version. DGGRID version 8.3 with exciting news features and indexing systems will land soon too #DGGS #geospatial #grid anaconda.org/conda-forge/dggri

[the math is way over my head, hence the wiki page leak, but a good read nonetheless]
“HIGHLIGHTS:
• Hexagonal multi-structural elements enhance Earth's surface modeling precision.
• Integration of indexing and conversion rules improves geospatial data computation.
• DGGRID implementation shows increased precision in raster and vector data modeling.
• Addresses limitations in existing software for Earth observation data.
• Pioneering approach expands geospatial data processing applications…"

The amount of #geospatial #bigdata #grid @xarray_dev @pangeo_data compute, coding, and conceptual brain power is mind-blowing. Very humbling yet empowering to work with these smart people to bring #DGGS #datacube functions to the Pangeo ecosystem.

Major drop in productivity on the second day of code sprint at . Seven days of constant stimuli taking their tool.

This morning I been working on a manuscript and a bit on . See if I can get to and Unicorn in the afternoon.

Release v0.2.6 of adds functionality to split cells along the 180º meridian. This allows purely Cartesian programmes like to portray a .

Still a brute force approach, needs an heuristic to limit down the set of cells tested.

These days I have been addressing cases like this. A cell that crosses the 180° meridian. None of the software I use is able to interpret it correctly. Long way to go for modern .
