My kid recently changed her name, not for marriage or any external-rule-related factor. She just wanted a name that was more "her". And now I look at the name I gave her at birth and it doesn't suit her at all, and I think what a stupid custom we have to give permanent names to babies, when we don't know who they are yet.

I think that telling anyone your deadname places an unfair burden on them. I don't want to know anyone's deadname. As far as I'm concerned, it has nothing to do with them as they are now, just like my deadname does not in any way represent me. It never felt like my true name anyway. It always felt like a role I was playing. Like I'd somehow picked up the wrong lunch order at the canteen of names. There are sensitive, potentially damaging things that once shared, can't be taken back, and honestly, I would prefer to think of people only as they themselves feel most comfortable being called. Because you know a brain holds on to those kind of little trinkets. I would rather not burden myself nor anyone else with that kind of difficulty. And if anyone flat out asks? They don't understand what they're asking for. Like a child asking for a mousetrap to play with. Or a boulder to eat.

Never felt that way? Great, this post isn't for you. I know there are many out there that experience genuine distress, and I'm here to say it does go away I've spoken to two men who have my dead name and I only just realized today it stopped bothering me at some point.

Today I learned that #slack saves a „username“ field for your account and doesn’t tell you ANYTHING about that. This lead to my #deadname being #leaked today.

So…
a #queer space I’m in is using Slack as a communication platform. Due to various concerns we wanted to switch to Matrix.

Our IT had put up a Slack-Matrix #bridge to ease the shift away from Slack.

Turns out this bridge was using a „username“ field that slack had previously depreciated in favor of display names.

As I had joined a Slack years ago before my #transition it must’ve created this username from my email back then, which contained my deadname.

When I transitioned I changed my email and the „Full name“ field on all the slack instances I was on.

I joined that queer Slack space after this and it must’ve just copied over that original username.

THE USERNAME FIELD WAS NOT SHOWN ANYWHERE. It was completely #hidden.

And now the Slack-Bridge had leaked my deadname via the username into our new Matrix space.

Dear Slack Developers/Team,
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!

FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO CHANGE THIS NAME:

- Go to the slack web app (I couldn’t find it on mobile)

- Click on the profile picture on the bottom left and click on „Profile“

- Click on the tree dots next to „Set a status“ and „View as“

- Go to „Account Settings (external link)“

- Scroll all the way down (UNDER „Deactivate account“!?!)

- Click „expand“ on the „Username“ section

- Change your username and click „Save“
