@rogeliop

Circa 1982, junior high: we'd bring our floppies in for trade. We used the single-hole punch method to double-side our disks. Cool kids had a hardened case for their floppies.

We were ][ people. We were, after all, students at Cupertino Junior High School.

If I said to you, "Don't Copy That Floppy" - would you know what I was referring to?

Please boost for enhanced reach.

Quick side-tangent:

Atari had a very amusing model naming scheme back in those original home computer days. The 400 and 800 were computer models, but their peripherals took other numbers in the 8## range

The #Atari410 was a cassette drive.
(What we had first.) The #Atari810 was a floppy drive. (What we would get two of later for #DontCopyThatFloppy purposes) The #Atari825 was a dot-matrix printer. The #Atari830 was their direct acoustic modem. The #Atari850 was a weird interface module...

Amusing to check out

I am not sure I've seen a similar model/naming scheme otherwise? Usually the "device types" are split into their own naming/numbering iteration.

...

ANYway...

#Floppy 💾 disks, write blocker woes, pesky Windows behaviour: this blog post on my (occasionally somewhat hellish) journey trying to write yet another workflow tool for imaging portable media has it all #dontcopythatfloppy:

Photo of a laptop running the Ipmlab software. In the foreground is a removable USB floppy drive with some 3.5 inch floppies lying on top of it. To the right of the laptop is a vintage floppy storage box that contains more floppies.

For the #digipres #digitalForensics crowd - a few years ago I published a workflow description for imaging 3.5" #floppies, which included a Tableau USB write blocker.

Turns out this device does in fact not work well with USB floppy drives (I have a confirmation on this from the manufacturer). This can result in faulty or incomplete captures. More details in the updated workflow description:

github.com/KBNLresearch/forens

This probably affects other manufacturers as well.
