Growth for Growth's Sake: some thoughts on the Dublin Airport passenger cap and the Dublin Port expansion scheme.
How do we ensure that the infrastructure we develop is delivered in a way that aligns with our climate and environmental targets and is not just based on the old paradigm of ever-increasing growth?

Dublin Port Company is planning a massive expansion of its operations on lands to the south of the port over the next 15 years which increase its capacity to 77m tonnes p/a - more than double the current throughput. It claims that there is a need to plan for 3.3% growth year on year.
The inconvenient truth is that the throughput of the port last year actually fell 3.1% from the previous year.

This seems like a very shortsighted decision by Dublin City Council. I hope Irish Rail take it to An Bord Pleanála.
It also illustrates an ongoing problem where there is a lack of coordination and consistency on climate action among different agencies of the state.
