It is May, and I am off to find out what I can about the “beaver lady,” Dorothy Richards, who at one point lived with fourteen beavers in her compact farmhouse in the foothills of the Adirondacks. They had names like Eager, Delilah, and Hunk, and they trundled back and forth through the small rooms, stealing kindling from the fireplace to wedge between chairs and table legs, and dragging her oriental rug across the floor toward the door that led to their indoor pool.

Every coyote pelt reminds me of my own dog and for a few moments I struggle. Then I see a young woman in black stretch tights and black Polartec. It’s Grace, the teenager I had met here a year ago. Last year was her first year putting up her own lot in the auction, a muskrat she had trapped at a pond. When Grace sees me, she waves eagerly. “This year I have four muskrats,” she tells me, proud of the achievement.

@LGsMom #Beavers don't live in their dams. They live in lodges. I read once that beavers can let out enough water through their dams though to create a nice air space under the ice in winter. Their lodges must be porous enough to allow for air flow. The best books about beavers are #Eager by Ben Goldfarb, the new book #Beaverland by Leila Phillip, and books written by Frances Backhouse. Also I am very fond of the book Paddy by R.D. Lawrence.
