#BlackPanther

By Ryan Coogler, 2023

"Black Panther is a #solarpunk, #afrofuturist superhero film that helps spark discussions about three aspects of climate literacy: access to #NaturalResources, especially #RareEarthMetals like the fictional vibranium; the interconnectedness of #RacialJustice and #ClimateJustice, including one’s responsibilities to other people and nations across the globe; and the role of #GreenTechnology, including urban design, to create a #sustainable, just, and #ecological civilization."

Raising awareness about the plight of an endangered animal - the greater glider

“Most Australians don’t know that the species even exists..."

"Habitat destruction, including land clearing, logging and climate-fuelled bushfires have seen greater glider populations decline by 80% in some areas over recent decades...We need people power to help save the world’s largest gliding marsupial and all our threatened species. That starts with stronger national environment laws that close loopholes and actually protect our unique species.”

Koalas depend on bats

"Without the bats, the koalas wouldn't have the trees. So the bats are the ones that are fertilising those big eucalypts that koalas love."

"A lot of people overseas when they think of Australia, they think of koalas." In Australia "there's ...a lack of awareness about the role of bats in controlling insect populations, pollinating plants and spreading seeds, much like birds and bees do."

"Perceptions have consequences: The Conservation Council of WA (CCWA) says more than half of the state's species are in decline, or their status is unknown, due to a lack of research."

The federal government #ThreatenedSpecies #BakeOff, a social media competition:
Save my dogs, cats and all the cuddly stuff...

"Koalas, for example, are frequently allocated large sums of money for #conservation. Compare this to many lesser known, more impactful and at-risk species including the grey nurse #shark and foundation species such as seaweeds. Unless we build the profile of our lesser-loved #plants, #invertebrates, #frogs and fish, we’ll certainly see more species vanish."

The five-yearly state of the environment report, released in July, found the health of Australia’s environment was poor and had deteriorated, with at least 19 #ecosystems now showing signs of #collapse or near collapse. Despite this, a survey of 4,000 people across Australia conducted by the new council found 60% of respondents believed nature was in a good or very good state.
