Deforestation and no regeneration

"If you go down to the forests today, you’re in for a big surprise (mass deforestation) .
The forest has failed to regenerate after being logged. More and more logged areas no longer support trees where they once did."

"Forests that have not regenerated after logging represent a clear form of deforestation. Deforestation is a major global issue driving both escalating climate change and biodiversity loss. This is why Australia signed international agreements to both halt deforestation and to prevent biodiversity loss. And yet, this problem is evident in our own backyard."

Deforestation harms profits

"Global investors managing over $3 trillion in assets called on governments on Monday to stop and reverse deforestation and ecosystem degradation by 2030, in a statement signed ahead of a U.N. climate conference. As investors, we are increasingly concerned about the material financial risks that tropical deforestation and nature loss pose to our portfolios. Deforestation undermines the natural systems that global markets rely on - from climate regulation to food and water security."

Loss of terrestrial biodiversity in Australia: Magnitude, causation, and response

"Australia’s biota is species rich, with high rates of endemism. This natural legacy has rapidly diminished since European colonization. Extinction rates, already far exceeding the global average for mammals, are predicted to escalate across all taxa, and ecosystems are collapsing. Severe degradation of Australia’s natural world began ~250 years ago, when European colonization began removing Indigenous peoples from the land they had managed for >60,000 years."

"The authors “focus here on biodiversity loss since European colonization, particularly the contemporary processes shaping the status of biodiversity and the conservation response... More than 7.7 million hectares of the habitat of threatened species was cleared between 2000 and 2017"

“Australians have much to learn from an increased respect for, and application of, Indigenous ways of knowing. Embedding human social, spiritual, and general well-being objectives as an emergent property of healthy ecosystems is a core principle of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework."

4. The fact that we are building highways in all 50 states is the surest proof that could exist that the people of the United States really don't care about emissions or fossil fuels.
It would be physically impossible to do that much #EcosystemDegradation, consume that much #FossilEnergy, or emit that much CO2 above and beyond what the fossil fuels contained, by any other imaginable real world industrial process.
The purpose of highways is to enable more cars and trucks to go faster.
Madness.
