Trees near volcanoes signal eruptions by turning greener due to CO2 absorption from rising magma, which NASA satellites detect, offering early warnings. This system could protect 10% of Earth’s population living near volcanoes. In 2018, it evacuated 56,000 people in the Philippines safely before an eruption. Trees hold the key to disaster prevention!

US faces another summer of extreme heat, as Trump cuts services for dealing with the heat.

Meanwhile:

“A 2024 study found that the number of heat-related deaths in the US have risen 117% since 1999.

For vulnerable populations, such as migrants, prisoners or schoolchildren in under-cooled buildings, the burden of rising temperatures is compounded.”

🌍💪 This is hands-on in action! In our Freilandpraktikum, students assemble meteorological stations, calibrate sensors & collect field data (chloropyll levels, soil samples & more!) – all for their own research projects. 💡Real data, real questions, real science!

Two students are assembling a meteorological station.A soil sample, taken during our Freilandpraktikum. What do you think: Which soil types does this sample reveal?Field work from a bird's eye view: Our students are assembling meteorological stations.

Glaciers will take centuries to recover even if global warming is reversed, scientists warn

New research reveals mountain #glaciers across the globe will not recover for centuries—even if human intervention cools the planet back to the 1.5°C limit, having exceeded it.

The research, led by the University of Bristol in the #UK and the University of Innsbruck in #Austria, presents the first global simulations of glacier change up to 2,500 under so-called 'overshoot' scenarios, when the planet temporarily exceeds the 1.5°C limit up to 3°C before cooling back down.

The results, published in Nature Climate Change, show that such a scenario could result in glaciers losing up to 16% more of their mass compared to a world that never crosses the 1.5°C threshold.
