#ErgoMechKeyboard

2025-12-20

Initial feedback from Eldest on their first #MechanicalKeyboard (my Slump52):

The keys are too hard to press (35g red pros for the letters, and 50g red switches for the rest - just what I had on hand), easily fixed $$$ but for now it almost forces them into one finger typing.

The 5 key jams on the 2 key, more sanding of the keycaps required (had this with the A and F keys too).

And from my point of view, as an #ErgoMechKeyboard, the top pinky/ring keys would take some getting used to!

It started out smoothly, then got a bit tricky (can you see the two bodge wires on the back?), but my fourth #MechanicalKeyboard PCB design is assembled and working - suspect eldest will not want to wait till Christmas to try it out - will it pass as an #ErgoMechKeyboard? 🎄⌨️

A shame the Chosfox CFX keycap set didn’t include 1u Escape, shift, backspace, tab, nor anything like a cross or asterisk for the multiplication key on my layout 🤷

#ErgoMechKeyboard design mistakes this far:

1. Cursors too close to thumb keys (realised with #3DPrinting test plate).

2. Castellation pads are only on the top of the PCB, and I want the #RaspberryPi Pico controller mounted underneath (facing up) for my case design. Looks like surface mounting with pins again 😬

3. USB port too tight (in this resin print at least), cable fits but needs a bit more margin for tolerance.

4. Possibly the key spacing is just a fraction too tight (but could just have been the keycaps - only had to sand U/J)

White #MechanicalKeyboard PCB with pink Raspberry Pi Pico controller laid on top face down, offset to show the cutout allowing it to be surface mounted with the components in the plane of the main PCB. Solder pads are missing (only on the other side - whoops).Pink Raspberry Pi Pico face down on PCB with cutout, held in place by header pins with yellow in header block below.

My first designed from scratch #MechanicalKeyboard has arrived from JLCPLC - fingers crossed it actually works once soldered up - but they did a good job with #3DPrinting the resin case (just need to sand the bottom a little), and it looks like it will all go together as planned - and in time for Christmas 🎄

Still unsure if it will count as an #ErgoMechKeyboard but that was the idea behind the curve aside the looks 🤞

I am slowly getting better at soldering, 4 out of 7 successful #MechanicalKeyboard PCBs now - all three of my diode-free #GraphTheory wired keyboard PCB designs have worked (eventually) ⌨️🎊

UWOP, so here it is with default RGB as it arrived after I assembled it, from above along with a daylight photo of the caps and one showing the thickness compared to an Apple Magic Keyboard.

After much flailing and gnashing of teeth, I now almost have my second Sofle 2.0 set up the way I like it. I bought one from Ergomech Store, ergomech.store/shop/sofle-hybr, so I didn't have to carry one to/from work daily. But I (accidentally) selected MX style rather than Choc switch sockets (that I wanted). So, I'm waiting on a Corne to arrive that will use the Choc sunsets and caps that I had for this board.

And then there were two: This post was typed on my phone using my first self built Bluetooth #ErgoMechKeyboard, running on battery power with #ZMK firmware: the Gamma Omega Hesse. Like my other #MechanicalKeyboard designs this has a diode-free PCB using #GraphTheory. github.com/unspecworks/gamma-o

Small 36-key mechanical keyboard in a black resin 3D printed case with Chosfox CFX square keycaps in black (home row and thumb keys), orange (top and bottom on left), and robin blue (top and bottom on right). The middle thumbs have a 1.25u keycap, as do the S&L keys (could do this at D&K instead), which fit because these are slightly smaller than the Kailh Choc keycaps this case was designed for. The index and pinky home keys have a homing bumb. Two small black keyboards, on the left with a USB cable the wired only Gamma Omega TC36K (with purple MKB keycaps), and on the right showing a reset button and USB port on the top edge, the wireless Gamma Omega Hesse (with blue, black, and orange CFX keycaps).

I have just completed my new #ergomechkeyboard , a Tern-ble. The snap-on case is a little tight, and was bowing the sides upwards, but screwing everything down to a board solved that issue.
Now I get to learn a new layout. I am giving myself the goal of learning the Hands Down vibranium variant.

I've got to say, Boardsource.xyz has done right by me.

I have my beloved lily58 back up and running thanks to a replacement pcb/micro-controller. Many thanks to all who gave me troubleshooting pointers. I think it was a defective micro-controller all along.

My digits are confused but happy to be back to column staggered!

All I have is this tiny bedside table that already has a monitor on it, and mice are hard to use on the bed. Sooo, I switched to a @ploopy@mastodon.social Adept #trackball and a FalbaTech Atreus62 FT (Colemak-DHm layout) keyboard.

A tiny bedside table holding a monitor, a colorful 3d printed trackball, and a CNCed bamboo keyboard. It looks like a really tight fit, everything is really crammed on there. A normal mouse or keyboard, let alone both, would clearly not work in this space.

Well, now that my lily58 ergo mech board is down I'm falling back to my spare. It's an Epomaker TH 66 and its fine for a standard board.

I got to say though going from column staggered back to row staggered is not a happy place for me.

I'm crushed. The left half of my lily58 ergo mech keyboard started flaking out yesterday. Once plugged in it types 5tgb and then those keys go dead. I'm thinking a short.

It's a boardsource.xyz buy, not quite a year old. I'm going to reach out but any troubleshooting would be appreciated.

i'm learning to use qmk home row mods and holy shit it's soooo comfortable. except for the minor issue of locking my PC all the time because apparently i "roll" the A+L combination in words like "actually"
