Iron Man is an album by American jazz multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy, recorded in 1963 and released by the Douglas International label in 1968

The authors of the Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings commented: "Iron Man is... valuable for two fine duets with Richard Davis and for glimpses of Dolphy playing with the ill-fated Woody Shaw, a desperately underrated but unforgivably prodigal trumpeter whose recorded legacy is only a fraction of what it ought to be." - Wikipedia

From Eric Dolphy's 1961 album, "Out There," here's "17 West." He has such an energetic, fluid voice on the flute.

Here and There is a jazz album by multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy. It was originally released in 1966 on the Prestige label as PRLP 7382. It contains tracks recorded on three separate dates, in different locations...

In a review for AllMusic, Scott Yanow wrote: "Although it is easy to think of this set on a whole as containing 'leftovers,' Dolphy's strong playing on alto, flute and bass clarinet makes the music of strong interest to his fans." - Wikipedia

Outward Bound is the debut album by jazz multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy, released in 1960...

Regarding "G.W.", J. Hunter wrote: "While the rest of the band lays down beats and fills that would not be out of place on any bop date, Dolphy steps out of the head to blister us with a mind-boggling, lightning-fingered alto solo that threatens to go over a cliff at any moment. Dolphy and his partners maintain this unorthodox balancing act throughout the 1960 session." - Wikipedia

Outward Bound is the debut album by jazz multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy, released in 1960. It is oriented towards straight bebop, and slightly less adventurous than the majority of his later recordings. The album was recorded at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey and features Dolphy in a quintet with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Jaki Byard, bassist George Tucker and drummer Roy Haynes. Hubbard had shared living space with Dolphy when they both first arrived in New York City. The cover artwork was by Dolphy's friend Richard "Prophet" Jennings - Wikipedia

The Body & the Soul is an album by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard recorded in 1963 as his second and last release on the Impulse! label. It features performances by Hubbard with an orchestra and string section, and with a septet featuring Curtis Fuller, Eric Dolphy, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, Reggie Workman and Louis Hayes.

A reviewer for Negro Digest stated: "From the opening track to the last Hubbard establishes and maintains a mood of excellence that literally explodes out to the listener. His solos are pregnant with quality and melody, and his technique is flawless. Unquestionably, this is the best by Freddie Hubbard to date. As for the music itself, it is all mainstream. There is no attempt at far-out-ness. Each tune is easy discernible, being buoyant for the most part with beauty and form" - Wikipedia

"Out To Lunch!" by #EricDolphy. A random pick today from 2nd hand bin from a local record store during a lunch walk.

Not sure how I managed to miss this album as a kid when I listened to "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" etc. on daily basis.

One of the most impressive albums I've heard in years. A must have, I tell you.

Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth

This post-bop classic from 1961 has a pretty incredible lineup of collaborators, including Bill Evans (piano), Roy Haynes (drums), Eric Dolphy (alto, flute), Oliver Nelson (tenor & alto sax), Paul Chambers (bass), and Freddie Hubbard (trumpet). George Barrow (baritone sax) is not on the cover, because he doesn't solo, but everyone else does...and well.

Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth LP cover.

On black, an abstract. Title to the right in white, players below in blue. Reflected in the cover, too much sun. Sorry.

The black LP plays on a vintage, restored Bang & Olufsen Beogram 4000 linear-tracking turntable to the right.

Jazztodon artist of the week: Eric Dolphy!
From our friends at @aaj :
Dolphy was one of several groundbreaking jazz alto players to rise to prominence in the 1960s. He was also the first important bass clarinet soloist in jazz, and among the earliest significant flute soloists; he is arguably the greatest jazz improviser on either instrument. On early recordings, he occasionally played B-flat soprano clarinet. His style was characterized by a near volcanic flow of ideas, utilizing wide intervals based largely on the 12-tone scale, in addition to using an array of animal-like effects which almost made his instruments speak. Although Dolphy's work is sometimes classified as free jazz, his compositions and solos had a logic uncharacteristic of many other free jazz musicians of the day; even as such, he was definitively avant-garde. In the years after his death his music was more aptly described as being "too out to be in and too in to be out.”
