Es ist noch immer nicht vorbei

Zitat:

So, it seems that my 2.5 yo Seagate Exos X20 drives are reporting some quite insane read amounts:

Device Statistics (GP Log 0x04)
Page Offset Size Value Flags Description
0x01 ===== = = === == General Statistics (rev 1) ==
0x01 0x008 4 24 --- Lifetime Power-On Resets
0x01 0x010 4 22429 --- Power-on Hours
0x01 0x018 6 76426225523 --- Logical Sectors Written
0x01 0x020 6 667681744 --- Number of Write Commands
0x01 0x028 6 48054400526096 --- Logical Sectors Read
0x01 0x030 6 2915801075 --- Number of Read Commands

If those numbers would be correct that'd mean the drive would have been reading average 304 MB/s for the whole 2.5 year lifetime. I find this somewhat implausible. The drives max out around 285 MB/s with sequential read.

Did I hear "But surely Seagate's own openSeaChest drive utilities are better and report the correct values!" from the crowd?

Here's the relevant part from openSeaChest_Info -i:

Annualized Workload Rate (TB/yr): 9624.71
Total Bytes Read (PB): 24.60
Total Bytes Written (TB): 39.13

So, equally confused.

EDIT: Earlier I confused some numbers due to PB vs PiB being so different.

Einige hier betreiben ein nettes #NAS für alle möglichen Daten.
Aufpassen beim Plattenkauf und die Platten gut durchtesten:

Is it normal for an 8TB #seagate #exos #hdd to hum like a vacuum cleaner when idle and be almost completely inaudible (except for typical mechanical noises) when in use? I am worried that something is wrong with this drive. It is brand new though.

Well it turns out the #Seagate #Exos X14 12TB manufacturer recertified drive I bought was on its way to dying as it won't mount anymore and makes clicking noises after it spins up. It's fine, though, I have a warranty and it was just for testing. The S.M.A.R.T. values were pretty bad for at least one of the items despite saying it's fine so I'm not surprised.

Someone should invent a noisemaker that makes random #HardDrive sounds and what noise it makes is configurable based on a selected drive brand and type, so you could have it be #Seagate #Exos, WD Blue, #Maxtor, small laptop ones, 5.25-inch and larger ones, iPod- and Zune-sized ones, etc. This could be run on its own or connected to the hard drive indicator LED pins to make noise when a drive is accessed.

I shouldn't buy a manufacturer recertified #Exos from #ServerPartDeals, I don't have a #NAS to put it in and I don't want to spend more to get one, plus I don't have space for it. Unless I put it under my desk and have it run when I need to do backups? It wouldn't be running all the time, that's a bad idea and would be noisy. It would need to be on its own network that only devices that need to access it would connect to. I have off-site backups. It would have to be in #RAID.
