ComputerBase reports that various drives like Seagate's IronWolf NAS line, Toshiba's Cloud Scale Capacity Drives, #WesternDigital's WD Red, and Seagate's BarraCuda lines are all showing price increases of between 23% and 66%. Damn, the brand new drive started clicking too, so the root issue didn't come from the actual drive (doesn't mean the initially replaced drive isn't fried)
Tried changing the sata port, then the sata cable, and still clicking, so I am now leaning towards the molex to sata cable... I knew that jank would eventually catch up, but didn't expect it NOW

Beta's clicking drive finally gave enough checksum errors to be considered degraded, and a replacement has been ordered, it's a patience game
Dissecting the NAS, I heard the clicking noise coming from the left side enclosure, but because all drives are stacked, I couldn’t pin point which one it actually is (I have poor serial number documentation)
Now, I just hope, hope it is one of the 2 4Tb failing

i have been listening to these two chattering back and forth at each for the past two days and I realize now I had gotten very used to a very quiet desk. The sound of the HDDs was so odd to me that I thought it was the wind outside...
And yet it was a sound I had known near constantly from like 1990 to 2018.
weird how we quickly we can get unaccustomed to a sound.
Question: I'm making a fresh backup on a new drive. Around 14TB. Should I do this in phases to let the drive cool down periodically or let it run with no cool down?
I have a production drive and two backups. I am retiring the the production drive, moving one of the backups to production and then replacing it with a new drive.

fortunately, it's part of a #RAID, the important stuff is also backed up off-site, and I've even tested those backups somewhat recently.
