Hello ๐ fediverse I have setup a single user account on my new instance on the fediverse @stu

Hey, all! Anyone hearing this who is a mastodon or fediverse server admin? (Not single user instance) I'd love to be able to talk to you about your experiences! Looking to start one myself (along with some others). Please let me know if I can pick your brain. (Please boost if so inclined.)
Does anyone know if there is a piece of software to let me, idk, firewall ActivityPub? I want something that can examine every incoming and outgoing message with an arbitrary script and then decide whether to accept or drop the message.
Both for T&S reasons and just for plain old spam/ham reasons.

Anyone using #gotosocial know if there is a way to reset followers/following count after setting it to hidden? I would like it get down to a nice clean 0, or is that impossible after having that info federated?
I just discovered FediAlgo ( https://fedialgo.thms.uk/ ), and if anyone is looking for a controlled and open source implementation of a Mastodon algorithm, it looks pretty promising! #privacy #fedialgo #algorithm #fediadmin #fedi #fediverse #feed #activitypub #socialmedia #socialweb #opensource #foss #fossfinds
For all folks upgrading to shiny new @peertube v8.0.0: make sure to read release notes that mentions change from yarn to pnpm!
Install pnpm on your system:
sudo npm install --global pnpm
If you used following command in your upgrade scripts:
sudo -H -u peertube yarn install --production --pure-lockfile
Replace it with:
sudo -H -u peertube npm run install-node-dependencies -- --production
And make sure to run upgrade script dist/scripts/migrations/peertube-8.0.js afterwards as described :blobcatnerd:
Self-hosting/instance update:
Iโve decided to shutter the kamloops.social experiment; Iโve come to the conclusion that hosting an instance for other people just isnโt in me.
As soon as I had one person request an account on the instance I was filled with immediate regret; there were a number of flags that made me suspect it was someone trying to set up an illegitimate/bot account, and so I had to do a bunch of investigative work to look up their IP and email domain etc., which immediately became too much like taking on a second job vs. doing something purely for the fun of it.
TL;DR: make sure to tip your instance operators. ๐

At first I thought the Lighthouse was just a server.
A machine to keep the lights on.
But itโs become something else โ a quiet rebellion against the noise.
A reminder that you can carve out a small, sane corner of the web with nothing more than patience, Linux, and sheer bloody-mindedness.

Last 24 hours after moving to 2 vCPU VPS is showing 100% availability even with a couple boosts from users with 1,000+ followers.
Extra vCPU is making a difference.

Migrated to more powerful VPS.
Data gathered on my experiment to scale down the size of the VPS hosting my #Mastodon instance.
Based on the data, the scaled down hosting experiment will come to an end later today when I migrate this instance to the more powerful hardware.
The $2/mo VPS specs were decent (1 vCPU, 3GB RAM, 100GB SSD), but with only one 1 vCPU the system got so overloaded from boosts that it affected availability. It definitely looks like it was not RAM pressure nor networking.
The $6/mo VPS has 2 vCPUs and ran my previous couple of instances without issues. On top of the extra vCPU, for the extra $4/mo I get one extra GB of RAM, a firewall and seven backups.
A given, but: Running #Mastodon on one CPU core results in times when the system is slowed to a crawl.
Migrating 900+ followers brought the server to its knees. The same when someone with more than a few hundred followers boosts a post.
But, on average the instance is a little slower, but manageable.
Also eigentlich bin ich ja nicht so der Fan von #Fediblock, aber in diesem Fall mache ich eine Ausnahme. Dieses besondere "Exemplar" hat seine Daseinsberechtigung verloren.

Built a new instance (this one!) on a scaled down VPS (1 vCPU, 3GB RAM, 100GB SSD, $2/mo) instead of the oversized VPS (4 vCPU, 4GB RAM, 100GB SSD, $6/mo) that I had been using for the last couple of instance builds. #mastodon #mastoadmin #fediadmin #fediverse

The out of the box browser crashes some times while having several tabs open, writing answers and trying to change the language.
Also:
The bad preset by #mastodon and or the browser to reload the page is not only disturbing but might interfere, as well as the more than questionable intent to set the language some how by the software.
Work around as of now is to be stubborn, click away the crash message "wait, close cancel or go on" and work on until settings are solved and message is sent. Open a new tab in the same window of any other message or link inside the website and close the "broken" tab.
Recommendation as of now:
* Don't open several tabs.
* Be stubborn and concentrated.
* Find out how to get rid of annoying and hurtful programing like page updates and automatic language settings.
Screens saved and ready for review.

Finally got the internal link previews working! The solution ended up being NAT Reflection, but I overlooked a granular setting related to that. Once I noticed it - all goooood ๐
