The domain name for this instance was just transferred away from squarespace to Namecheap. I think I have everything configured correctly, but we'll see. If I disappear, that's what happened. :P
And with that, I'm done with Squarespace for good.
So - dann mal Updaten auf Rocky 9.6 #mastodonadmin #serveradmin #wartung
Playing with email again. Since I have an email server and a mastodon server, I figured why not have an email address for my mastodon account. So I did. If you want to email me (and I don't know why you would) you can now send mail to my mastodon handle, omitting the leading @.
I might come to regret this. π
I just transferred the darkmoon.social domain away from Squarespace, so this instance may go down for a short time before I can get DNS set up again. If that happens, don't be alarmed. It'll be back up in all of its radiant darkness soon.
So one of our #servers decided to loose the home dir all the configs, volumes and docker-compose.yaml was living.
The running containers still hat the data... but it wasn't possible to #dockers cp em out... we could move some within the container and then docker cp them...
We still have no idea how this could happen... nobody was on the server and rm'ed it.
Took us a few hours now to restore everything.
Any of the #serveradmin around have a idea how this could happen?
Question for postfix folks:
I have a Postfix instance handling two virtual domains on a VPS, and both currently share the same ipv4 and ipv6 addresses. I would like to properly configure dmarc, but that requires separate IP addresses for each domain. My provider is loathe to give me a second ipv4 address, claiming scarcity. Fair enough. They did provide an ipv6 range that I can use.
So, are there still issues with ditching ipv4 altogether for at least one of the domains?
Well, this blows. Spamhaus has blocked the entire 2600:3c00::/64 IPv6 range, which includes my email server. That seems a little excessive.
I found out because I tried to send an email to my employer, and they use Spamhaus. This is a problem for me and I'm not sure what to do. Maybe I can disable IPv6 for sending email. I dunno.

I finally got my first bit of legitimate spam (is that even a thing?) since installing SpamAssassin on my mail server. SpamAssissin did its job and correctly tagged the message as spam.
Honestly, when I first set up my mail server, I thought I'd get a lot more spam. Either I've been lucky, or my internet hygiene is pretty okay.
Woohoo! I got spamassassin working. Now to wait for some more spam. I never thought that would be something I'd write. π
Did the admin of the server where my site is hosted today. Keeping AI scrapers and AI bots out is ongoing and successful. π
A thing that has been a trend for a while now, is the increase in visitors with a VPN. Okay, it makes studying demographics harder, but it makes me a happy man. More and more people see the light about being safe and anonymous on the internet. π
Yikes! I almost forgot a very important step.

I recently added email to my mastodon instance, and with that success, I'm ready to finally cut email ties with Google. I bought a new domain name and I'll set that up with postfix/dovecot/etc, then start moving all of my various internet accounts over to it.
The new domain has a .net TLD instead of the current .com TLD, and that's nice; it's more appropriate since I'm not running a business. Now I'm just waiting for the DNS changes to propagate.
Hey guys, I have a question for anyone out there who likes to #selfhost
I'm looking for inspiration and ideas for new services to host on my Ubuntu Server instance. I have Pihole running, and I'm wondering what you guys who run Ubuntu Server in your #homelab have running in your servers?
I'm new to all of this, so please be kind, as I said before, I'm just looking for inspiration!
Hello everyone, is it just me or this file is inaccessible
https://iam.charon.monster/files/18beccc8-b956-42f0-90fe-90a36b701ca4
after migration to another vps, I can't understand that why some of my file is permission denied, I checked the perm, and it's surely correct and I can upload this image, but can't view some of the old one. I'm running misskey in docker. The file is there when I search for it.

Upgraded to Mastodon v4.3.6 https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.3.6 - let me know if there are any issues.
....... and we're now live on Mastodon v3.4.5 #mastodon #update #server #admin #ServerAdmin
Let me know if any issues.
After some rather significant technical gymnastics some very smart people (myself not included) seem to have employed a fix to get #Microblog to #Mastodon crossposting working again with my setup! Here now is a test post to see how it works :) Documentation sometime next week for the benefit of other admins, as long as everything remains stable ππ€ #socialmedia #serveradmin #tech
