A flashback to three years ago, almost exactly to the day, when my husband and I saw our first Snow Bunting, a rare-to-our area visitor. The tiny non-breeding female stands on a flat pale gray and white rock against an intentionally blurred background of blue water. She is white below with warm brown and orange tones on the face and patterned wings, dark legs, and a golden orange bill.

To escape the wind and dangerous surf at the beach from Erin, @CTGT and I spent the morning of our first full day of vacation searching for a Red-cockaded Woodpecker. After almost two hours, when we were convinced this wasn’t our day to find it, success! A territorial, non-migratory bird species that lives in mature pine forests in the southeastern United States, it was listed as endangered in 1973. Successful conservation efforts have resulted in a downgrade of its status to threatened.
