Our #BackyardBirds - wrens, juncos, nuthatches, cardinals, sparrows, doves, woodpeckers, finches, and robins - quickly vanished when this young Red-shouldered Hawk swooped in for a short visit, moving from a tree close to our house to the top of our neighbor’s swing set.

A flashback to three years ago, almost exactly to the day, when my husband and I saw our first Snow Bunting, a rare-to-our area visitor. The tiny non-breeding female stands on a flat pale gray and white rock against an intentionally blurred background of blue water. A year after coming oh-so-close to finally seeing a Clay-colored Sparrow, I finally clapped eyes and bins on one. Last November one was repeatedly sighted at a nearby location so @CTGT and I headed out to find this rare-in-our-area small sparrow. After four hours with no success, I had to leave to attend a workshop. My husband and a friend stayed to continue the search and, of course, found it. One returned to our neck of the woods about two weeks ago and after three visits, I was finally rewarded with adding this skulky little creature to my lifer list.
