This came out last week, and what is in it is really good. It covers where homes are better for a2a or a2w, and shows that all homes are suitable for something in regards to heat pump technologies. Unfortunately it studiously avoids policy issues, some planning but particularly building regulations. I’m hoping that UK policy deems us worthy of getting off of gas around 2040. 🤷‍♂️

@tabmcleo and still have advantages, even if electricity generation is (still) suboptimal:
1. They pollute the local environment much less, meaning people (cyclists, pedestrians, ...) are no longer forced to breath in exhaust gases
2. They automatically get greener, whenever the grid gets greener (which is the responsibility of governments / energy providers, not individuals), unlike heating systems / vehicles powered by fossil fuels

Study Says UK Electric Cars and Heat Pumps Don't Save Carbon Yet

A recent study from Queen Mary University of London suggests that electric cars and heat pumps in the UK may not be saving carbon emissions as much as people think. This is because the UK's electricity is still made partly from fossil fuels. The study says the country needs to improve its power grid and make more clean energy first.

@diemkay recently installed a heat pump to replace an aging oil boiler. Very happy with it. To respond to some of the myths:

Expensive to run. Actually costing less per kWh than oil and gas.

Noisy. Can’t hear it over my neighbours oil boiler. Possibly a bit more noise than gas.

House will be cold. Actually not, just as warm and a nice warm feeling of not burning oil.

Water only warm. No just as hot.

They are different and work in a completely different way to conventional boilers that are still in the Stone Age comparatively. Failing to understand that is the cause of much misapprehension.

Just had solar and a battery installed. Even better.

Another myth is that a heat pump is still powered by coal. Not in the UK anyway. Electricity is a “perfect” fuel. Easily transported and generated by many different sources, mostly now renewable.

OVO Energy

OVO offer Solar or Heat pump installations installing across the UK, helping customers with their home energy, EV charging, green technology, and more.

Solar panels are a great step towards energy efficiency, long-term savings, and reducing your carbon footprint.

OVO has carefully selected trusted teams across the UK to install solar panels and heat pumps. So you can enjoy the personal touch of a local expert – with the peace of mind that comes with a household name.

OVO also plant a million trees each year and support new renewable power projects in communities across the country.

In 2023 it became the first major UK energy supplier to ditch REGOs (a poorly-designed system of trading certificates rather than making any meaningful contribution to renewable capacity).

Goodbye, oil heating! We won't miss the noise, the smell, and the soot. No matter how high-tech the furnace is trying to be, at heart it's still a caveman technology.

Ignominious remains of an oil furnace and boiler.

People in my community have started a campaign to educate and persuade our neighbours to switch to heat pumps. I love how sincere and positive it is… also, the name makes me giggle a bit.

Ditching a Heat Pump for In-Plaster Infrared Heating?!
Is infrared the new rival to the heat pump? We explore "In-Plaster" infrared technology that heats surfaces directly rather than the air. This efficient, space-saving alternative is gaining traction for homeowners looking to optimize their carbon footprint and energy bills.
