Why is it assumed all #Homeless are lazy and/or addicts? #homelessness is on the rise not because of addiction or laziness but because people can't afford the rent/mortgage. They work. You have no idea how many homeless are holding down jobs but with rising costs can't afford to both feed their family and pay rent/mortgage. There are other homeless I met that are disabled on a fixed income or senior and on social security and can't afford to feed themselves and still have enough left for rent. Many choose their vehicle because auto insurance is cheaper than rent or a mortgage.
Let's help these families and individuals get a place, even if only temporary. It's cold out there. Shelters, where they exist, are filling up. Many areas don't even have shelters. There are children and seniors out in the cold. Are you going to accuse them of addiction too? Laziness? Prices of everything, including rent and mortgages, is sky high. Choice between eating or rent, you'd choose eating and surviving too.

As the City of Victoria conducts what outreach workers say are deadly sweeps of Pandora Avenue, those who facilitate unhoused individuals into addiction rehabilitation centres say there’s not enough spaces to meet the needs of those who are left on the capital city’s streets.
“What I’m faced with is, where am I sending them?” said Theresa Reeve, executive director of the relatively new non-profit Westcoast Recovery Outreach.
Reeve says private treatment centres only take a select number of government-funded clients, leaving empty beds open for higher paying private clients.
“I could fill up their treatment centre if they would allow me,” said Reeve. “But they only let a few government-funded beds. We need to increase those government funded beds. These people deserve a chance just like everybody else.”
“People having to wait anywhere from two weeks to three months waiting to get into a detox bed is not acceptable. We need a better system now. We just had an election about. Where are all the beds they promised they were going to build?”
The Minister of Health told CHEK News in a statement that her government is adding new services without specifics.

Most letter writers to our local newspaper, #TimesColonist are quite conservative & cruel in how they think about marginalized peoples. You rarely see compassion in TC letters published, that Mr. Chris Holiday has shown. I don't know the person but grateful locals like them exist.

I have been appalled at the increasing level of stigmatization and hatred directed toward the unhoused population.
I live on Pandora Avenue and frequently walk by individuals suffering most severely from our province’s housing crisis. I’ve witnessed individuals in crisis and using threatening language towards passersby but I have also witnessed verbal harassment of unhoused individuals coming from the balconies of luxury apartments.
Public safety is a two-way street, everyone deserves the right to safety and dignity. A 2023 study by the Ministry of Housing reports that 67% of unhoused individuals have lived in their community for more than five years and 23% for their entire lives.
These are our neighbours, and they deserve respect just as much as us who are housed.

My dentist's office is 2 blocks away from the street encampments on Pandora in downtown #VictoriaBC. My dentist has provided a lot of free dental services to many of the #houseless folks who live in tents on this busy street. I wish everyone was as kind & compassionate.
#YYJ is a bourgeois government city & capital city of BC. There's so many empty buildings all around downtown core & also around the surrounding municipalities - which could be used as housing for many houseles individuals & houseless families.
Much of the so called new 'affordable housing' developments being built/built very recently are totally out of range for many folks who aren't even houseless. There's more than a few houseless folks who have either PT or FT jobs too. #StopHomelessnessStigma & #StopHouselessStereotypes 👍
Please keep putting pressure on your local, provincial & federal governments to fund more housing for houseless citizens.
Please don't be cruel to houseless folks & help them, if you can. Almost everyone is only a few paycheques or one horrible life changing accident away from being houseless.
