Grande nouvelle !

Reservoir of liquid water found in the Martian mid-crust (∼11.5 to 20 km depths), using seismic data acquired by the InSight lander

I missed this when it came out!

PRESENCE OF LIQUID WATER MOST PROBABLE EXPLANATION FOR DATA COLLECTED BY MARS LANDER
Wright’s team used data that InSight collected during a four-year mission ending in 2022. The lander collected information from the ground directly beneath it on variables such as the speed of Marsquake waves from which scientists can infer what substances reside beneath the surface. The data were fed into a model informed by a mathematical theory of rock physics. From it, the researchers determined that the presence of liquid water in the crust most plausibly explained the data.

Scientists examining data from NASA's InSight Lander have revealed the likely presence of an underground reservoir containing enough liquid to cover the planet with a mile of water, Live Science reports:

An immense reservoir of liquid water may reside deep under the surface of Mars within fractured #IgneousRocks, holding enough to fill an #ocean that would cover the entire surface of #Earth's planetary neighbor.

That is the conclusion of scientists based on seismic data obtained by #NASA's robotic #InSightLander during a mission that helped decipher the interior of Mars.

Goodbye sweet #insightlander You were a wonderful little probe who opened our understanding of Mars in a new and beautiful way. No longer is it just a dead world, but a living dynamic planet. When humanity comes together we can produce some of the most incredible things and push ourselves further than ever before; let's push ourselves forward and finally touch the stars. #colonizespace #lowearthdevelopment #mars

WRITER FUEL: Twilight is closing in on NASA's Mars InSight lander — a robotic seismology lab that has been studying the interior workings of the Red Planet since November 2018.

NASA confirmed it was unable to contact the Mars InSight lander (opens in new tab) on two consecutive attempts, ending the four-year mission on the planet's surface.

The largest #earthquake, or #marsquake, ever detected on #Mars has revealed layers in its crust that could indicate past collision with a massive object, such as a #meteoroid. Previous data has suggested the past occurrence of a large impact, and the findings offer evidence that might support this hypothesis. #InSightlander #seismology #geology #space #scicomm

"A trio of papers published Thursday in the journal Science, using data InSight has collected, reveals the red planet to be something like a colossal candy treat imagined by a ravenous deity. Its crust is split into two or three layers of volcanic chocolate. The mantle below has a surprisingly sizable and rigid toffee-like filling. And the planet’s core is surprisingly light — less nougaty center, more syrupy heart."
