Abundant Residual by Margaret van Patten, circa 2015 (intaglio printmaking)

An abstract mixed-media print featuring several black bird silhouettes against a light background with various organic shapes and patterns. The artwork is divided into two main sections: 
Top Section: Depicts several large, reddish-brown pod-like shapes, one containing an outline of a human heart. Above these, three black birds are shown in flight or perched.
Bottom Section: A bright yellow and red polka-dot pattern covers the lower half of the image, with several more black birds perched on or near this patterned area.
Text and Elements: The word "mine" appears handwritten in a few places, and outlines of human legs and feet are visible on the upper right. The overall style is layered and textural, characteristic of printmaking or collage.

"Holy Family," by Lauren Ford (1891-1973), etching, 9 5/8 x 10 9/16 inches (24.4 x 26.8 cm). As a print, it appears in many collections including the Carnegie Museum of Art, The Dayton Art Institute, and Newfields Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Her book The Ageless Story, about Mary and the birth and childhood of Jesus, was named a Caldecott Medal Honor book in 1940.

From LIFE Magazine, July 4, 1938: 'Simple and imaginative, Ford paintings often have a religious theme, frequently include children. They are appreciated not only by wealthy urban collectors but by the farmers who are Lauren Ford's neighbors near Bethlehem, Conn. There, except for an occasional trip abroad, this artist-farmer lives the year round, surrounded by her family, cats, a dog and a large number of cows. Five days a week she spends seven hours a day doing the kind of work that has evoked from metropolitan critics such adjectives as "picturesque," “tender, "fanciful" and "humorous." Much of it has for its background the nearby Connecticut countryside. "I guess Connecticut is in my blood," says Lauren Ford… ‘

Trying to do something to lift the mood today, I have been reading and watching about intaglio printing on tetrapak for a wee while, so as it is sunny I will give it a go. Lots of lessons learned.
1. Remember that images transpose when drawing them. I managed with the writing, but forgot about the WSJ26 Logo.
2. If there is a sharp bit on your scrim, it will mark the tetrapak (and give additional lines as a result).

It's been a while since I haven't posted here!

So, here are two steps of an ongoing etching, showing the plate protected in varnish and the drawing on it to expose the copper.

Between the two steps I have bathed the plate in acid and covered some more areas before another bath, to establish depth difference between lines.

The plate is currently in the acid bath, hopefully I'll be able to do a first print in one hour or so!

Why recording audio when you could also print it? Here's one of my first test prints with tetra pak on the pasta press. Making myself familiar with the process in order to print some christmas cards later this year.

Just made my first drypoint intaglio prints at home using a spoon as no press 😄. Etched the design into the plastic and then printed onto damp paper. A simple design but going to be doing something on top of it. Now i know it works though will be trying different designs!

Since I took a 26 year hiatus from printmaking, there’s a lot I haven’t seen or heard of.

I was astonished to listen to this edition of platemark podcast where Dan describes his creation of solar etching plates (steel-backed UV sensitive polymer) that give a deep and also detailed intaglio bite.

It sounds like he did all this before I was born, and yet it didn’t come up in any of my school work

This wonderful moment, when the image you have made emerge from the dark of the plate for hours also emerges from the dark of the ink.

Still a WIP, as I just had the time to finish the etching and clean the plate, but not to do a first test print. By the look of the plate alone it seems quite ok, the picture stayed readable. I'm happy because nothing was sure, like with all complex aquatints I reached a point where the plate state was too confusing and I relied on instinct to "paint" the last tones. The main doubt I have now is if the dark tones are dark enough, as the acid bath was a bit dull. We'll see when I can proof-print it at last 🙂
