Aylin Tezel – „Falling into Place“ (2023)

The last day of May and this place is as green as greenery gets. It’s a place for all seasons. Today it rained. It is soothing and eternal. The dog and I pass through. I’m grateful for the sheer beauty of it. I’ll see it again. Soon.

All nature has a feeling: woods, fields, brooks
Are life eternal: and in silence they
Speak happiness beyond the reach of books;
There's nothing mortal in them; their decay Is the green life of change; to pass away
And come again in blooms revivified.
Its birth was heaven, eternal it its stay,
And with the sun and moon shall still abide
Beneath their day and night and heaven wide.

The Old Man of Storr on the Trotternish Ridge is probably the most famous walk on the Isle of Skye.
The Old Man (Bodach an Stòr in Gaelic), is a 55-metre-high pinnacle of basalt rock which is all that remains of a 2,800-million-year-old volcanic plug.

We took the opportunity to do this walk early(ish) this morning. Brodie came with and although on the lead the whole time as there were sheep about, his behaviour was exemplary.

#oldmanofstorr #trotternish #isleofskye #scotland #walking

The Trotternish Ridge (highest summit being The Storr at 719m) was created around 60million years ago by a massive landslip. Hot volcanic lava flowed onto the weaker sedimentary Jurassic rock beneath it causing the latter to collapse and form the undulating cliff faces of the eastern coastline of Trotternish. The magnificent pinnacles and weathered basalt rock formations of The Storr dominates the Island’s north-eastern landscape and can be seen for miles by travellers heading north as well as from the mainland. It is one of the most photographed landscapes in Scotland. The rocky peak dominates the area and its summit is a touchpoint along The Skye Trail, a popular walking route that can take anything from 5-10 days by foot. The ‘Old Man’ stands in front of the Storr and is scarcely visible from down on the main road. The walk up to it is steep but fairly short. This view from the highest lookout point is the reward. The Cuillin Hils are in the distance..

The graveyard at Trumpan Church. The image shows a mossy gravestone in the centre foreground comprising a Celtic cross on a plinth. It is set in grass and there is a stone wall behind it. Beyond that the ground drops away steeply giving a view of two buildings on a shoreline with sea beyond, and a promontory coming in from the left with cliffs in the distance. The scene is in sunlight.

Glamaig Hill Race - 25

Saturday 12th July 2025
4.5 Miles, 2500 feet
From Sligachan Hotel, Skye
Entry fee: £5
Start Time: 3:00 pm

“Glamaig has been described as “one of the toughest races in Scottish hill-running” and although it is classed a short Category A race it is insisted that all competitors must wear or carry windproof and waterproof body cover.”

Glamaig is a Corbett; that is a hill between 2500 and 3000 feet.

#isleofskye #sligachan #walking #running #weather

Glamaig (Scottish Gaelic: Glàmaig) is the northernmost of the Red Hills on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It lies immediately east of Sligachan. It is one of only two Corbetts on Skye. From many angles the hill resembles a perfect cone of scree, though it is linked to the rest of the Red Hills by way of a bealach, the Bealach na Sgàirde(Pass of the Scree). In 1889, a Gurkha named Harkabir Tharpa scaled Glamaig in 37 minutes; his total time for the round trip, starting and finishing at sea level in the bar of the Sligachan Inn was 55 minutes. Legend has it that he ran it in bare feet, and his record stood until the 1980s, despite being attempted by Olympians such as Chris Brasher in the 1950s. From Sligachan one route of ascent (whether running or hillwalking) is simply to head up the scree aiming for the summit - this climb is very arduous, due to the unrelenting gradient and the slipperiness of the scree. Descent may be made by way of ascent.

Simple sunset. This fleeting moment marks the end of another day. It passes on in a perpetual motion. It is happening now somewhere on earth. This colourful sky brings joy and the night.

#sunset #april #isleofskye #scotland #timepassing

“Sunset (or sundown) is the disappearance of the Sun at the end of the Sun path, below the horizon of the Earth (or any other astronomical object in the Solar System) due to its rotation. As viewed from everywhere on Earth, it is a phenomenon that happens approximately once every 24 hours, except in areas close to the poles. The equinox Sun sets due west at the moment of both the spring and autumn equinoxes. As viewed from the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun sets to the northwest (or not at all) in the spring and summer, and to the southwest in the autumn and winter; these seasons are reversed for the Southern Hemisphere.”

Further to the launch of my new Isle of Skye portfolio, 11-years in the making (https://www.iancylkowski.com/scottish-islands/isle-of-skye), let's highlight a few specific areas.

First, here's 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻, one of the first true "wow" factors you come across when on the island. Here you get sweeping panoramas that take in both the Red and Black Cuillins.

There are also loads of rivers in the area, with delightful water features that lend themselves to amazing compositions.
