This affects critical thinking, moral philosophy, and media analysis skills.

Thanks Reagan.

It truly was a pleasure - and fun! - to do some outreach today via being invited to have a table at a middle school career day...The area of town and being near a military base means there was a wonderful variety of students...
I took 'surplus' (!!) maps and the students who were inclined chose a map they liked and a spot on that map - and together we cut out that place into a circle and used a button maker to make them a pinnable map...
There was some time - if the student was open to the idea - of talking about the maps and spatial data behind them as we made the button - be it a coastal Oregon topo map button, an Indonesian geology map button, a US/Mexico demographics map button, a San Fran earthquake map button, and many more...

Beloved music teacher Jesús Rodríguez gives final lesson, deciding to leave the US before his humanitarian parole is ended early by Trump

“Don’t leave us!” a student shouted. 4th & 5th-graders hugged each other, wiping away tears.

Major #health cutbacks: The budget proposes massive cuts at the #NIH & #CDC, but it includes $500M for *Health* #RFKJr’s signature initiative: Make America Healthy Again. The CDC’s budget would be cut by more than half, to $4B from roughly $9B.

Significant reduction in #education: Education spending would fall by $12 billion under #Trump’s 2026 blueprint, w/the most significant cut coming from a plan to “streamline” #TitleI money for high-#poverty #schools & other #K12 programs.

Mostly finished with my "Google Sheets to Multilingual Forms" script. Done enough to make it public - beta 1, if you like.

Takes data from the spreadsheet and creates #Google Forms in the languages you set up. (Translation done in the GSheet.)

Feedback welcome.

#K12 schools in USA #education need to communicate with families in preferred languages. Can't just link an English form and be done. This Sheets helps with #FamilyEngagement.

The spreadsheet is at:

I think my near-future ai-in-education #scifi #ShortStory (from about a year ago) holds up pretty well. My first story with this sort of narration (and actual characters). I hope my #k12 #education experience is evident.

It is NOT a plot-driven story; more of a slice-of-life story. It takes place over 8 days, so not like a whole lot of character growth (even for teenagers) can happen in that time frame.

Story is at osugisakae.com/blog/ai-future-.

#Writing #feedback always appreciated.

We need more #OpenSource and #OpenContent in #k12 #education.

Not super easy when #Google #Chromebooks are (for some valid reasons) the main devices students use.

For example, students learning #HTML and #CSS do it on .org or .com websites that include advertisements, instead of simply editing and viewing files in the browser. Can't wait to see how they do PHP and database access.

FFS, set up a #Linux #LAMP server on a virtual network and let them go to town.

@chton Just stumbled across this now. You, sir, are as generous as you are insightful, intelligent and kind.
Educators, parents, caregivers - if you have neurodivergent folks in your life - this is the feedback they need to help with tasks that can feel so overwhelming. Teacher Tools will be coming soon:).

“There is this myth of the digital native, that because some people have grown up with digital devices, they are well equipped to make sense of the information that those devices provide,” says Joel Breakstone, who led the 2021 study. “The results were sobering.”

What if public education became a space for solutions? I foresee engaged students - you?

"“Oftentimes I hear older people calling us [kids] creative, right? If we’re called creative, why can’t we use that creativity to solve some of the world’s biggest problems?” he asked. “Unfortunately, there are barriers for K-12 [students] to network.”

Trump administration considering issuing #executiveorder to integrate #artificialintelligence into #K12 #education, according to a draft circulated by #WhiteHouse to several federal agencies, obtained by #WashingtonPost. Under the draft executive order federal agencies would be instructed 2 take steps 2 train students in using #AI and incorporate it into #teaching related tasks. The agencies would also be asked to partner w the #privatesector [surprise] to develop relevant programs in #schools

Google Hit With Lawsuit Over Data Collection on School Kids

news.bloomberglaw.com/litigati

Nor for nothing, but this is the same issue some parents in Toronto and I tried to raise against Google years ago -- and Google told me that their relationship was with their clients -- the schools -- and the schools consented. It was up to the schools, they claimed, to seek parental consent.
