Not all vision impairments stop you from getting behind the wheel! Proper adjustments and guidelines have allowed people with limited sight to drive safely and independently.

VISION MYTH OF THE DAY
Eligibility to drive is based on the type and extent of visual loss. If the proper limitations or modifications are made, many persons with limited eyesight may drive safely.

We love seeing young travelers put technology to work! This summer, six teens in the Ready! Set! Go! Program (co-directed by Penny Rosenblum and Tina Herzberg, and funded by the South Carolina Commission for the Blind) spent a week exploring independence and building new skills. From tech practice and campus scavenger hunts to learning about paratransit, shopping at Walmart, and even a little self-defense and bowling, the week was packed with adventure.

They used Aira's Walmart Access Offer to navigate and shop independently—then turned their finds into a potluck feast. (We’re only a little jealous that we didn’t get to try Landon’s cupcakes!)

Check out Landon's awesome recap from his experience:

#FreeBSD provides the Ports Collection, a convenient way to install applications. Some ports allow users to configure options before building and installing. By default, this configuration is done through an interactive menu in the terminal.

To improve readability and #Accessibility especially for users with low vision or color blindness, it's important to offer simple and customizable color options. These features have recently been implemented and documented in the preview version of the FreeBSD Accessibility Handbook:
freebsd-accessibility-9d667f.g

The next step is to extend these features to all terminal-based graphical components.

I'd love to hear from you:
Do you use any accessibility features in the terminal?
Which color-related assistive technologies make the biggest difference in your daily workflow?

Together, we can make FreeBSD more accessible for everyone. #ThePowerForEveryone #FreeBSD #Accessibility #OpenSource #LowVision #ColorBlindness #AssistiveTechnology #AccessibilityMatters

Each window demonstrates a different color scheme, illustrating the newly implemented color customization options for improved accessibility. The configurations include toggles for language support and ctags options, with varying background and text colors to enhance readability for users with different visual needs.

About a month ago, I had the privilege of presenting #FreeBSD at the Institute for the Blind in Milan, during an event held in connection with #GAAD (Global Accessibility Awareness Day). It was a profoundly meaningful experience that deepened my commitment to digital accessibility and the development of assistive technologies.

I'm excited to share that the #Accessibility Handbook, focused on vision-related assistive technologies in FreeBSD, is nearly complete. This task has been made possible thanks to the tireless dedication of FreeBSD community volunteers and the support of the @FreeBSDFoundation for new projects and documentation centered on visual accessibility.

Aira at the 2025 NYC Blind Travel Foundation Media Weekend!

Aira is proud to sponsor the 2025 Blind Travel Foundation, providing visual interpreting minutes for grant winners' travel projects. We joined grant winners, co-sponsors (Two Blind Brothers & Feeldom), and the BTF team for a weekend of connection and exploration.

A highlight was a tactile tour of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, enhanced by Aira's geofencing for free visual interpreting and AI. The tour brought exhibits to life through visuals, textures, and an amazing guide.

We're excited for our third year partnering with this impactful organization and eager to follow upcoming projects, including an accessible outdoor guide, a blind music education podcast, and a video series on blind history. Learn more: blindtravel.org/

@travisj I think I get it now, one refers to the window theme (the outline), while the other defines the internal window style. I tested both on FreeBSD main/CURRENT-15.0, and they work perfectly! I should have tried before asking.

I'll try to create a #FreeBSD package to make these themes easily installable for visually impaired users.
