#Keybase

what we really need is #keybase, but with a better boyfriend. maybe a committee. otherwise i've been using a self-attested CA chain to sign my S/MIME certificates used by Mail.app on my phone in absence of something good.

This problem means people on current #Debian or Debian-derived #Linux systems who have #Slack, #Keybase, or #Dropbox installed via the package manager (i.e., not a Snap) *are not getting updates* to those packages, including both functional and security updates.
Since Slack is an Electron app, i.e., it has an install of Chromium bundled into it, and Chromium gets regular security patches, the version of Slack they have certainly has security vulnerabilities in it.

#TechIsShitDispatch
It's been more than a year since #Debian #Linux deprecated the insecure #SHA1 hash algorithm in #APT repositories.
The #Keybase, #Slack, and #Dropbox repositories (I'm sure among others) are still using SHA1, and therefore for over a year they have not worked in Debian without changing the default APT policies to allow them.
I know Slack knows about this, because I told them. A year ago.
Why haven't they upgraded the security on their repository?
Seriously, wtf?

I am wander why people who cares about privacy, don't use the OLD and SECURE technique of using a GPG key and send messages using Email? I think can do something similar, but you don't need to install new software just to send a email.. ;)

This keyoxide.org It's a GPG-based online identity verification instead of using #Keybase.

What is y'alls opinions on ? It is now owned by , but has been around for ages! They offer 250GB storage on their end-to-end encrypted system... so it would be a nice alternative to my job's file allowance.

Why exactly do I need one of the devices with the keys on it to remove a domain from my #Keybase account? Esp. when the proof for it already failed (no longer own that domain).

Also funny I could delete the entire account without it, but I can't just remove that domain.

(Also where did I keep that backup of those keys anyway? And will it even be compatible with the latest version of it anymore?)

Unrelatedly, it appears that #keybase isn't quite dead yet because now I'm getting a flood of spam... the "Block User" endpoint times out now, though. :-/

Today's post is important for anyone who have a old #Keybase account.

If you had one 2019 you got some free magic internet money.

Someone one the internet is willing to pay a lot of real money for that, around ~500 euro. So if you have a bit of time, I recommend putting those money into some good use.

Donate them to charity for example, or just splurge on yourself. Anything is better than leaving them lying there.

I wrote a quick #blaugust post about it blog.nyman.re/2025/08/13/putti

ugh fuck. I know I'm late to the party. but can't believe keybase.io was aquired by ZOOM.

this is why we can't have nice things.

Does anybody actually _use_ #Keybase for anything, or do you, like me, just keep adding new devices to it and removing your old decommissioned devices because you want to keep access to your account on the off chance it might be useful some day.

Max Krohn (maxtaco, one of the Keybase founders) developed FOKS (Federated Open Key Service); "FOKS is like Keybase, but fully open-source and federated, with SSO and YubiKey support".

Just felt like recounting my experience migrating away from #Keybase over to #Keyoxide. Many thanks to the @keyoxide team for the awesome work! ❤️

Please feel free to reply to this thread or in the blog comments with corrections, if I got anything wrong.

Thanks for reading! 🤗

Does anybody out there use keybase.io for anything? Or is it generally dead at this point? I know that some people have used it in the past to coordinate encrypted communication around pre-disclosure of security issues, but that was a few years ago. It’s got some neat properties, and seems like it can be used safely if you never give it access to your private keys. But looking at it these days makes me think it’s just stagnant and/or overrun with cryptocurrency grifters. #keybase

@lynnesbian #keybase may be dead in the water, but #keyoxide is still around at least
