The photo shows a small bird belonging to the kinglet family. It has an olive-green body, a pale belly, and a distinctive black and yellow crest on its head (orange-centered in males). Tiny and energetic, it's often seen flitting through trees, especially conifers.

#kinglets are another challenge bird! Both the golden-crowned and the ruby! They flit and flutter, dart and leap in the branches. Eaters of mostly bugs, winter's the best time to spot them. Once the leaves are in they disappear. I think of kinglets as the tiniest unicorns of the underbrush. My goal is to photograph them with crisp focus, their crown exposed and brilliant as flowers... It's fun to have goals to look forward to.
