Emerald in the Wild

While hiking through a dense, brushy area in Georgia, I captured this image of a ruby-crowned kinglet, Regulus calendula. Its striking features stood out amidst the tangled vegetation.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"This image features a ruby-crowned kinglet, a tiny songbird perched delicately on a branch. The bird has an olive-green and grayish body with fine, soft feathers. Its beak is thin and sharp, and its large, dark eye is surrounded by a striking white ring that gives it an alert appearance. The branches are lightly adorned with lichen and small, yellowish leaves or buds, hinting at the freshness of spring. The background is beautifully blurred, emphasizing the bird as the central subject. In the lower-left corner, the photograph is signed “© Swede's Photographs.”" - Copilot

Ruby Crowned Kinglet Touch and Go by Debra Martz
This little Ruby-crowned Kinglet landed just to my left and quickly flitted to the next plant. I luckily got a quick shot off and it was on to the next plant and then out of sight in a few seconds.

I nearly forgot to show-off this Ruby-crowned Kinglet that foraged in our backyard today. It loved the asparagus fronds, sweet basil, and grapes. It’s quite the rare to see their full crown! #RubyCrownedKinglet #Birds #Fujifilm #SOoC 🪶

Forest Birds

The forest was ominous and still this morning, I could see the mist in the air slowly move eastward. Then around 0800 a flurry of small birds flew in into my backyard from the forest. There were blue jays in the forest treetops imitating the calls of a red-tailed hawk, quite interesting. A pair of cardinals arride and just hung out in the crepe myrtles. Around 0830, I heard the crows, it was as if the forest was just waking. Then suddenly everything when quiet again. Among the small birds was this ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula).

"The image shows a small bird perched on a thin branch. The bird is a ruby-crowned kinglet, identifiable by its small size, olive-green upperparts, and white wing bars. The bird has a faint eye ring and a small, thin bill. The background is blurred, highlighting the bird and the branch it is perched on. The bird is facing to the right, and there are some green leaves on the branches around it. The image is interesting because it captures the delicate and detailed features of the ruby-crowned kinglet in its natural habitat. A feathered pinball pauses briefly on a thin bare branch. Greenish, with finely yellow-striped wings, its head appears the same size as its body, making it ridiculously cute. A tiny spot of the red crown is visible on the top of its head.

"These are tiny songbirds with a rounded body, short wings, and skinny tail. They have relatively large heads, and their bills are short and thin, perfect for gleaning small insects. Golden-crowned Kinglets are pale olive above and gray below, with a black-and-white striped face and bright yellow-orange crown patch. They have a thin white wingbar and yellow edges to their black flight feathers" (AAB). Lichen Lookout

I found this ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula) while pushing through the brush around and obscure pond in Albany, Georgia. In this image, I particularly like the colors of the plants and the lichen on the tree branches.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

"Amidst a sun-dappled forest, where the air hums with the promise of summer, a small bird, ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula), perches on a slender branch. The foliage around it is lush, adorned with moss and lichen, creating a verdant tapestry. Shafts of golden light filter through the leaves, casting intricate patterns on the forest floor. Our kinglet, with its olive-green and gray plumage, blends seamlessly into this woodland haven. Its yellow “spectacles” catch the light, adding a touch of vibrancy to the serene setting. As it sings its spunky song, the forest comes alive—a symphony of nature’s soft whispers." - Copilot

Just Going to Fly Away

Last fall, I was working my way around some thick brush surrounding a pond in Albany, Georgia. I came across this ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula). I may have startled the bird, or maybe I was getting too close to a nest.

"A tiny bird seemingly overflowing with energy, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet forages almost frantically through lower branches of shrubs and trees. Its habit of constantly flicking its wings is a key identification clue. Smaller than a warbler or chickadee, this plain green-gray bird has a white eyering and a white bar on the wing. Alas, the male’s brilliant ruby crown patch usually stays hidden—your best chance to see it is to find an excited male singing in spring or summer." - allaboutbirds.org

"The image captures a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a small bird known for its vibrant plumage and lively behavior. This species, part of the family Regulidae, is native to North America. The bird’s overall coloration is olive-green, which blends well with the surrounding foliage. Its feathers appear soft and well-groomed.

The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is perched on a thin branch, which seems delicate and slightly curved, providing a natural setting. Its wings are slightly spread, revealing the lighter coloration on the underside. The wing feathers have subtle markings. Although not visible in the image, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet gets its name from the ruby-red crown patch on its head. When excited or agitated, this crown becomes more prominent.

The bird appears alert and focused, typical of its energetic nature. Ruby-crowned Kinglets are known for their quick movements as they forage for insects and small prey. The soft-focused background consists of slender branches and delicate green leaves, enhancing the bird’s prominence.

The photographer has credited the image as “Swedei’s Photographs.”" - Copilot
