A small olive-green bird that has white, black, and yellow wings is perched on an evergreen tree branch.

Still working through the perching birds (Passeriformes) as a way to study, and a way to help distract from the utter destruction of this country.

Not going through in any particular order (should not be a surprise). Today starting a very small family, that of the Kinglets (Regulidae) with only two species. Both overwinter in our area. Both are small, and lighting fast, so I have an extensive set of blur, blur, blur photos. They can be tough to spot, until you become familiar with their behavior.

Ruby-crowned Kinglets are tiny, fast insect eaters with a small bill and “booties”. Overall drab to yellow with strong wing bars. It is worth it to spend time in the woods to experience these beauties.

A small plump drab bird with a red crown. The crown is rarely visible, so rely on size, distinct eye crescents in front and behind the eye, and when you can see them, light colored feet. These move at lightning speed and can be difficult to follow. I try to follow and anticipate where they will pause.

While hiking through a dense, brushy area in Georgia, I captured this image of a ruby-crowned kinglet, Regulus calendula. Its striking features stood out amidst the tangled vegetation.

Forest Birds

The forest was ominous and still this morning, I could see the mist in the air slowly move eastward. Then around 0800 a flurry of small birds flew in into my backyard from the forest. There were blue jays in the forest treetops imitating the calls of a red-tailed hawk, quite interesting. A pair of cardinals arride and just hung out in the crepe myrtles. Around 0830, I heard the crows, it was as if the forest was just waking. Then suddenly everything when quiet again. Among the small birds was this ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula).

Lichen Lookout

I found this ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula) while pushing through the brush around and obscure pond in Albany, Georgia. In this image, I particularly like the colors of the plants and the lichen on the tree branches.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

Just Going to Fly Away

Last fall, I was working my way around some thick brush surrounding a pond in Albany, Georgia. I came across this ruby crowned kinglet (Corthylio calendula). I may have startled the bird, or maybe I was getting too close to a nest.
