Tired: Using "The Bible App" on your phone

Wired: Buying a bible from an ebook store, breaking the DRM with #calibre and plugins, and reading your favorite bible on #KOReader or some other ebook reader app on your phone.

Explanation: "The Bible App," a.k.a. "YouVersion," is a wonderful program with many different bible translations, bible reading plans, social features, videos, and more. It is, unfortunately, also a piece of #spyware that contains many trackers, including Facebook Analytics.

Free your #bible.

P.S. I will give them credit for reducing the number of trackers from 12 to 6. The Facebook ones aren't cool, though, and they're still there.

Oh right! I don't think I mentioned it here (unless u check my #weeknotes) but I finally started #reading #NemesisGames, book 5 of #TheExpanse

I just finished chapter 8! It's been good so far, loving the new perspectives from the characters here.

Added a new calendar view to github.com/paviro/KoShelf/ Quite happy with it now, also redesigned the statistics page a bit. A Home Assistant addon is also available! #KoReader #Reading #Books #HomeAssistant

Screenshot of KoShelf's 'Calendar' dashboard showing June 2025 reading activity. The interface displays monthly stats: 10 books, 144 pages read, 1h 30m total reading time, and 17% days read. A calendar grid shows colorful horizontal bars representing reading sessions on various dates, with notable activity clusters on June 16-18 and June 19-22.Screenshot of KoShelf’s ‘Reading Statistics’ dashboard. The interface shows overall stats like total reading time, pages read, and session durations. A heatmap tracks daily reading streaks across the year, with the current and longest streak at 4 days. Below, weekly stats display time spent reading, pages per day, and average session time. The sidebar on the left includes navigation for Books, Statistics, and Calendar.Screenshot of KoShelf, a static website generator for book tracking. The interface has a dark theme with a sidebar menu on the left featuring 'Books', 'Statistics', and 'Calendar'. The main area shows a 'Currently Reading' section with one book and an 'Unread' section with 22 classic books. Each book is displayed with its cover, and many are marked 'New'. At the top right, there’s a search bar and a filter dropdown for sorting. The bottom-left corner shows version info and the last update timestamp.

github.com/paviro/KOShelf now includes a Home Assistant addon so you can easily run it in Hass.io #KOReader #book

@jeffmcneill right. That’s an option too, haven’t checked that integration yet. #KOReader is my e-reader app of choice so worth trying this too. Although I’m a bit hesitant to let it flood my bookshelf.

You are using #KOReader and you want a nice website to look up all the things you highlighted in a #book? github.com/paviro/KOShelf

Desinstalei o #koreader do Kobo, non me aporta nada. Déixoo no Kindle para facer probaturas, se algo.

Tanta historia (dous clicks) pa ná :grimace:

Pero de verdade que non sei que proveito lle ía quitar. Probei case quince días eh!

To try later, I have multiple devices running KOReader and want to sync reading positions across devices. github.com/koreader/koreader-s

#KOreader on the Kobo has the option to use #WebDAV, which means I can connect it to #Nextcloud and transfer books/manga wirelessly.

Hurray for open standards!

I could not get Overdrive working on my Kobo: no matter what I did, it would not let me add a library card to the system. The Libby app (whether an actual app on my phone or the web interface) was working perfectly fine with two different library cards.

After much searching, especially on `mobilread.com`, I found a solution. I logged out of my account on the Kobo. I then logged in again and was then able to add a library card to Overdrive. This did mean that all Kobo files had to be re-synced. However, as all of my books are managed by calibre, I wasn't worried about losing any of the actual (and specifically any side-loaded) contents.

I can now borrow and read library books straight from my Kobo again or borrow them via Libby and then sync to the Kobo. Now, if only koreader supported Overdrive...

This was all motivated by my wanting to read the Dune graphic novel which I could only seem to be able to read via a web browser (🤮). I've yet to see how readable this will be on a grey scale Kobo, mind you. Watch this space. I might have to go out and buy a colour one... 🤔😉

@HuguesRoss I use #koreader and I am very satisfied.

Maybe some sort of pipeline to convert articles saved somewhere into .epub and load them into my Kobo when I'm adding books?

I really enjoyed the ability to simply "sync" and get my latest saved from Pocket while updating the ones I'd archived. Not sure I'll be able to replicate that without something like #Koreader and extra scripting

me: what's this icon in the top-left of #KOReader that looks like a pokéball?

koreader guide: it's literally called a "pokémon ball icon", and is shown when you tapped down on a word for more than 3 seconds -- that means an alternate menu will be opened

I'm off of buying e-books from Amazon Kindle for a few months now. Instead trying to buy books as DRM-free #ePub where possible and falling back to buying through Kobo (relatively easily deDRM'able). I collect everything in my private #Calibre book collection, and read them using #KOReader. Feels great to own (some) things again, and to keep things "safely" in an open source ecosystem.

Got KOReader installed in my Kindle. It is literally upgrading the device for free.

I can now read EPUBs without having to convert them first to KFX. :ablobcatwobfast:

Thanks to @hook I (re-)discovered #KOReader. Especially the #Nextcloud Notes integration got me hooked. 😎
